A site collecting Tove Jansson's illustrations for The Hobbit. How cool is that? I wish she'd done Earthsea too.

Hilarious (and graphic intensive) post by [livejournal.com profile] aervir of Bad Tolkien Art. See Ulmo's strategic beard! See Gandalf as Moses! See Lúthien the exotic dancer!

At the request of [livejournal.com profile] merrymaia and [livejournal.com profile] aervir, a list of some of my favourite Tolkien art.

I’ve tried to pick artists whose work I admire in general – I’ve usually included a link to other examples of their art, so you can take a look at those. Be warned: the links for the pictures go directly to big image files.

There’s a lot of other artwork that I like which is in various books; e.g. I like the black and white drawings by Victor Ambrus in The Tolkien Bestiary, but that’s more of a liking for his illustrative style in general than a particular picture.

And while we’re on the subject, here is a plug for the brand new website Tolkien Fan Art, launched just a few days ago.

Poking around Anke Eissmann's site today, I found two new paintings of Faramir, one in the Houses of Healing called Athelas and one with Boromir entitled Escape From Osgiliath (I can't link to them directly, but they are all linked from that main page above).

She has also painted one of my favourite major characters, Tom Bombadil, and one of my favourite minor characters, the fox:
"A few creatures came and looked at them when the fire had died away. A fox passing through the wood on business of his own stopped several minutes and sniffed. 'Hobbits!' he thought. 'Well, what next? I have heard of strange doings in this land, but I have seldom heard of a hobbit sleeping out of doors under a tree. Three of them! There's something mighty queer behind this.' He was quite right, but he never found out any more about it."

Here is an old story of mine about them both, and another character, Moss and Stone.

I am absolutely delighted with these German translations of my three Tolkien stories Death by Water, What the Thunder Said, and The Fire Sermon. Not just because of the care taken over the translations, but because one of my favourite Tolkien artists, Anke Katrin Eißmann agreed to have her pictures displayed alongside the text.

Anke has some beautiful new paintings of Faramir and Eowyn up on her site, linked from this page: "He Looked At Her...", Lasting Impression, and Family Portrait (with Elboron!). Click on the thumbnails for the larger versions (I don't seem to be able to link to them directly).

My friend Alawa has just pointed me at the website of artist Mariet Theune, whose picture of Faramir and Eowyn I adapted as an LJ icon. I love these pictures, they have such a distinctive style.
