I've still been very run down all week from this virus. We got antibiotics on Wednesday and they're kicking in, but I still have very low energy levels. Done very little in the way of work, although did manage to write a short story called Fair Game.

Fair Game

I wrote this at the request of a couple of friends, and also because I wanted to try writing in the style of a classic children's book. It is set some time after the events in my story A Game of Chess, but it's possible it would stand alone. People go bird-watching and find their courage. There is conscious homage to Antonia Forest's Falconer's Lure.

My utter adulation to your new story, and to Faramir of course. It's beautiful, and I would say that you definitely succeeded in writing the style of a classic children's book because it brings to mind of many I read as a child.

Thank you, Furius, I'm really pleased you liked it. Faramir had some very strong opinions of how he wanted to behave in this story, which were very different from what I thought he would do...! I'm glad that the style works, thanks for that.

Hey, sorry to hear you are still laid low by the virus.
Take it easy.

I'll read the story soon when my visitorial flood has reduced to a trickle. Something else to look forward to.

Sorry to hear you're still feeling crappy, hope it doesn't go on for too much longer. Loved the story.

Thanks, Iain. We have a weekend's dedicated lounging planned, with the TT DVD playing a large part, I suspect.

Glad you liked the story.

I'm very glad you liked it :-)

I'm feeling a lot better today, i.e. have actually got dressed and to my desk to do some work, which I certainly didn't have the energy for last week!

I think that you could probably get away with not having read Chess, although it does pick up on a particular element of that story and runs with it (Faramir's main plot line in Chess). If you do read Fair Game first, I'd be interested to know if it does work as a stand alone.

I think more of Queen's Gambit would go a very long way towards helping me recover :-)

Chess makes good travel reading (and writing, actually - most of it was done on trains). But it uses up a lot of ink and paper. Looking forwar to more of QG tonight. Enjoy sunny Newcastle!

Finally got round to reading this. I do like it, even without knowing that much about your version of the characters.

The third paragraph made me laugh, because of all the different names and trying to work out who was who. I remember doing that with Antonia Forest's books, and other children's books when I've come at them in non-chronological order. By the way, is Leof (forgive lack of accent) supposed to be like Fob?

Oh, that third paragraph... Picture me, pen in head, kicking myself for setting up a scene in which I had to introduce five separate male characters, all of whom are somehow related to each other. No pronouns. No mercy.

Leof is homage to Oliver Melendy from Elizabeth Enright's books. A small blond boy with quiet purpose.

I'm glad you like it. (Phew!)
