Book meme from [livejournal.com profile] selenak.

A book I love no matter what anyone says: Various books by Maeve Binchy. Shut up.

A book I loathe no matter what anyone says: The World According to Garp, by John Irving. Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] gfk88.

An undeservedly obscure book: Enchantress From the Stars and The Far Side of Evil by Sylvia Engdahl.

An undeservedly famous book: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. *yawns* What was all the fuss about?

A book I ought to read: Any of the 20+ plays by Shakespeare I have never read.

A book I think others ought to read: William - An Englishman by Cecily Hamilton. My First Persephone Book.

Oooops... and I know none of them!

Except the Shakespeare plays. I have read Hamlet and Henry V.

I have been a compulsive reader all my life, and encountered many things that were not worth the tiome and paper -

But Garp is the book that I would choose in a heartbeat if I were offered the chance to go back and not read it.

I came very close to throwing Garp at the wall.

(PS Congrats on your excellent showing in the Mithril finals!)

I read too much contemporary fiction. Not as much as I used to, I'm largely fed up with it.

I have started to read a hell of a lot of fiction allegedly aimed at "young adults", and find it often more satisfyingly written. Tanith Lee's Piratica really surprised me by being not just funny but moving and thought-provoking.

Tanith Lee's Piratica

I've just started that myself. I'm enjoying it greatly so far, but have been temporarily sidetracked by Neil Gaiman's Coraline, which is also excellent stuff.

I've gone back to (re)reading a lot of my children's books too. I must pick up Piratica, you've been very positive about it!

Ah, stop! I must have missed Maeve Binchy! I first read The Glass Lake, then I gave her a second and third chance and read Tara Road and Evening Class.

Sorry, but no.

I know, thoroughly indefensible. Good comfort reading, though, like eating a box of chocolates or a bag of crisps.

Not at all. I have to make a confession:

I read Rosamunde Pilcher. The Shell Seekers is one of my All Time Favourites, same as Winter Solstice. .

Shame on me.

I really like Binchy as well. But boo for "Quentin's," she just phoned that one in.

Yeah, I think she's got lazier. I haven't read that one, I'll wait till I'm desperate at a railway station, or see a copy for a quid.

I loathe EVERYTHING I have ever read by John Irving. I don't know whether he's a misogynist or just writes like one and I don't care. I can't stand him.

The only other one of his I've read is Owen Meany, and although it didn't move me to near-incoherent rage like Garp, I didn't like it all. I've not read any more. I didn't much like the film of The Cider House Rules, though, couldn't see what the fuss was about. I found both Garp and Owen Meany very manipulative books.

****Sorry, gfk88*****

Hmm, well I'll let you have that one, as I agree Garp is by no means his best.

So if, for instance, someone breaks into your library and pulps all your Binchy books, you can be sure it's not me because I'm not offended at all, actually.

This is as good a time as any to ask: where are you in your Dunnett reading?

I'm about a third of the way through Queen's Play. I was really enjoying it, and then for some reason I put it down and haven't picked it up again for a while. I do this with books.

Hehe... I'm planning on being at the Tolkien gathering in August 2005!
