A book I ought to read: Any of the 20+ plays by Shakespeare I have never read.

A book I think others ought to read: William - An Englishman by Cecily Hamilton. My First Persephone Book.

I have been a compulsive reader all my life, and encountered many things that were not worth the tiome and paper -

But Garp is the book that I would choose in a heartbeat if I were offered the chance to go back and not read it.

I read too much contemporary fiction. Not as much as I used to, I'm largely fed up with it.

I have started to read a hell of a lot of fiction allegedly aimed at "young adults", and find it often more satisfyingly written. Tanith Lee's Piratica really surprised me by being not just funny but moving and thought-provoking.

I've just started that myself. I'm enjoying it greatly so far, but have been temporarily sidetracked by Neil Gaiman's Coraline, which is also excellent stuff.

I read Rosamunde Pilcher. The Shell Seekers is one of my All Time Favourites, same as Winter Solstice. .

I loathe EVERYTHING I have ever read by John Irving. I don't know whether he's a misogynist or just writes like one and I don't care. I can't stand him.

Hmm, well I'll let you have that one, as I agree Garp is by no means his best.

So if, for instance, someone breaks into your library and pulps all your Binchy books, you can be sure it's not me because I'm not offended at all, actually.

The only other one of his I've read is Owen Meany, and although it didn't move me to near-incoherent rage like Garp, I didn't like it all. I've not read any more. I didn't much like the film of The Cider House Rules, though, couldn't see what the fuss was about. I found both Garp and Owen Meany very manipulative books.

I'm about a third of the way through Queen's Play. I was really enjoying it, and then for some reason I put it down and haven't picked it up again for a while. I do this with books.
