That quote you posted from The Shipping News reads more like notes, I think. I read it, but found it a real slog. The film is enjoyable enough, if disjointed - and has Kevin Spacey in it.
I'm just glad I didn't have to pass any kind of maths to go to uni; I wouldn't have made it. Don't see the point either, given that I wanted to study languages....
Same as my sister - could never quite get a decent grade in Maths O-level, speaks five languages fluently and gets by comfortably in another two or three, including BSL.
