I am reading Fallen by [livejournal.com profile] aliana1. It's a novel set in the Houses of Healing and it's exceptionally good. Readers of this journal interested in WW1 should read it, as well as Tolkien aficionados.

"Perhaps one day," he said slowly, "there shall be wars where no one needs to touch anyone else." He was smiling now, a thin ghost of a smile. "You would not have to touch a man to kill him, nor be close to him." He shut his eyes. "Perhaps you would not even have to look at him."

Chilling.

I really hoped you'd take a look at it. I think you'd find the whole novel really interesting. I don't think you'd have to be very familiar with Lord of the Rings, just know that the city in which it's set is on the front line of the war, and everyone thinks that the world's about to end.

Thank you for reading! (Glad you like that passage; Beren's actually very prescient there, of course, but in context he probably sounds like he's just dropped acid. ;) )

I read it recently at HASA and was very, very, impressed - it is now one of my 'favourite stories' there.

I'm glad I posted in that case. It's super. Much better than the (Booker Prize longlisted) novel that I read just before starting it.

And now I am blushing! (I'm also intrigued that you thought of World War I parallels--I had World War II more in mind when I wrote it, but I'm pleased that you see it that way, too.)

'Tis true. Your voices are better, and your world is infinitely more imagined. (And I should have guessed WW2 when I read "greatest generation"! It's my habit to look for WW1 parallels in Tolkien fic.)
