[livejournal.com profile] gair and [livejournal.com profile] gerald came at the weekend, bringing joy! In return, I made them take rural buses and sit on hard chairs!

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel cooked a dinner of special magnificence:

Gin snow
Duck egg with watercress
Mushroom veloute
Roasted fennel with tomatoes, peas and fried potato
Pink grapefruit sorbet
Pear and olive baked yoghurt with lemon scones
Ginz and tonix

Recipes here. And pictures below the cut.

Stupidly, I didn't take a picture of the dessert, because it was so beautiful I was sitting gasping at it. But they were tiny, tiny scones of deliciousness!

Holy Moly! I should think that was worth any amount of rural buses and hard chairs! *drools*

They had to really earn their dinner! ;-)

mmmm...

(would he like to cater the conference entirely, perhaps? We'll splurge for a Chef's hat... ;)

I am so jealous I can't even tell you.

And do you mean that [livejournal.com profile] gair and [livejournal.com profile] gerald didn't get.... THE COMFY CHAIR?! *runs away*

You will simply have to come and visit!

I'm not convinced this house has any COMFY CHAIRS, but that just might be that I have short legs *grump grump*

Simmer dried ceps, carrot, celery and leek tops in water to make a mushroom stock; add a cup of cold coffee.

Wow o Wow. I can't even begin to imagine how that tastes!

I do like the idea of serving a tiny portion.

Actually ... how much stock to how much coffee?

It tastes fantastic.

Actually ... how much stock to how much coffee?

[livejournal.com profile] mraltariel, currently missing his connection at Chicago O'Hare airport, sez: "About 4/5 stock to 1/5 coffee - but add the coffee slowly and taste. You should be just about able to taste it."

Thanks!

Waves of sympathy to MrAltariel. I hope he gets where he's going very soon. With upgrades.

I keep saying in my mind mushroom... vegetables (specific) ... soy. And imagining it and then saying.... coffee.... And not imagining it. Definitely, definitely, something to try next week.

He made the flight, but his luggage is somewhere else.

The coffee works as a kind of 'mystery flavour': you know there's something extra there, contributing to the 'earthiness' of the mushrooms, but it's only when you're told that you realize it's coffee (despite the clue of it being served in espresso cups!).

Ah, that is definitely food of joy! I wish there had been pictures of the tiny, tiny scones though.

Hope the rest of the weekend matched the utter gorgeousness of the food!

I might just get some more tiny tiny scones made so that I can take some piccies...

The weekend was made of happiness. Green Knowe was as lovely as ever (we toured the house this time and [livejournal.com profile] gerald received the mouse!). There may soon be a film of Chimneys.

Holy good gravy, they're like shots from Masterchef! I can't even begin to imagine how to organize, time and plate up a seven-course dinner (if jinnantonix counts as a course). It all sounds wonderful.

Hurrah for a weekend of joy - and [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel's cooking sounds as though it's reaching new heights even for him! Wow.

Yes, I think the trip to Midsummer House has been a real inspiration.
