From [livejournal.com profile] white_hart: Blog a Penguin Classic. Sign up, they send you a free book, you agree to blog a review in 6 weeks. (UK and Eire residents only.)

I got The Later Roman Empire AD 354-378. 516 pages. Blimey! Some of that had better be notes.

Oh, that looks fun!

Sadly I cannot do it, as it is only available to people in the UK and Ireland. Lord knows I have a lot of free time in which to do this sort of thing. ;)

I meant about to add that to the post - thanks for reminding me. Sorry you can't join in :-(

Oh, well. Odds are that they would either send me a) something recent I don't care about or b) something I already have.

Not that free swag isn't nice, especially when it's books.

I thought postage costs were the same these days, so maybe there's some obscure law about competitions that they have to follow.

I guess it's more likely that they only have rights to distribute some or all of the texts in the UK and Ireland.

I got The Time Machine which is rather an easy option, even if I haven't reread it since I was ten.

Not a bad result. I can't remember if/when I read that.

Then you probably haven't, as I can't imagine anyone ever forgetting the last chapter or so. For me, it contains the most memorable image in all of SF.

I remember now: I have only read The War of the Worlds and When the Sleeper Wakes.

I've signed up, I hope I'm allowed... technically I lived in the UK for the last nine months, and will be living there for the next two years at least. *crosses fingers*

I've never written a proper book review before (out of sheer laziness, really!), but I figured that this would be a lovely opportunity for me to do something new. Thanks for the heads up! :D

I've been allocated M/F. I've not heard of the book, but that doesn't mean anything since I'm rather deprived, as far as literature goes. But I *have* heard of Anthony Burgess, so all is not lost. :P And Penguin's summary of the book is rather awesome, so I'm really quite excited about it.

Looking forward to your review of The Later Roman Empire AD 354-378!

I think so long as you can give a UK postal address you'll be fine. I've never heard of that Anthony Burgess either, it sounds great! The only one of his I've read is A Clockwork Orange.

I got Rimbaud's Selected Poems and Letters. At least, I presume it's Rimbaud: the email only tells you the book title, and that seems to be the only exact match. If I'd got just "Selected Poems" I'd still be scratching my head - there are about a dozen Penguin Classics by that name.

Yeah, that seems to be a bit of a weakness in their system: someone on [livejournal.com profile] white_hart's journal got Collected Novels (presumably Austen), and it's slightly irritating that 'The' is included in their alphabetical listing.

Still, though - free book!

Strictly, it's free only if your time is worthless. 576 pages: this fucker better be good.

And, in fact, is a title that was on my list of "must buys" for this year.

Coo, a weighty tome! Maybe they still think you're doing your reading your own height in books in a year and they're trying to help with the process?

I am wimping out of this, as I think I might as well stick to being a bit rubbish.

I'm sort of doing the reading-my-height thing: if I manage to read my own height, then I was doing it; it not, then - ahem - not.

It turns out Mr A. was planning to buy this book at some point in the near future, so we've definitely had a result.
