Torchwood

So, Torchwood. Kind of... icky, wasn't it? I think I get the story might be about corruption now. But Gwen is a useless POV character (and I'll never forgive her for what she's doing to Barry Backstory; although I think Burn wotsisname is giving the best performance in the show). I think if I was about fifteen, I might think this was the best TV programme I had ever seen. As it is - well, it's better than Robin Hood. But nowhere near as good as Strictly Come Dancing.

Hey, though! They're showing Crown Court on Legal TV!

I decided last week that I'd had enough of Torchwood. Horror just isn't a genre I go for and Jack lost his sense of humour somewhere, so there wasn't really enough left to induce me to download any more.

It's very thin on humour, which I'd thought would have been one of its strengths. I'll keep going till the end, of course - I'm still watching Robin Hood for some bizarre reason.

The first ep was quite amusing but that was it. Yes, I was expecting the Jack we met in the Blitz.

If I'm not enjoying a series or book, I just give up and move on to something better.

I find it very hard to give up on stuff. I'm assuming that they have some kind of story arc going on, so I want to see that through to completion. I've made the break with BSG now, I won't be going back to that when it turns up again.

I stopped halfway through S2 with that. I have occasionally been too quick to make up my mind, but from what I've heard from people who like it for reasons I wouldn't, I made the right decision.

Frankly, I'm only watching it so I can write acidic redactions of each episode in the style of Movies in 15 Minutes, and post them to LJ. Apparently my summaries are the only thing keeping a couple of my f'list loyal to it as well...

Bwahahaha! I'm not surprised; that's inspired.

*grins and looks faintly embarrassed* Thankyou :)

I must say I think I'm looking forward to letting rip on this week's excrescence. I thought it sucked unbelievable rocks, and I'm actually sorely tempted to seriously fanfic the Episode That Should Have Been, as well as giving what they aired a righteous sending-up...

I'm looking forward to your evisceration of this week's episode.

Oh, do! I did that with a B7 ep, one that shall remain nameless considering whose LJ we're chatting on. ;-)

I still recommend episode 5, although you might not like the resolution nearly as much as I did. But, knowing your tastes, [livejournal.com profile] vilakins, I think I can confidently say that you should not watch episode 6, ever. It's exactly the kind of horror that would really turn you off.

(Me, I'm enjoying the series, but not as much as I'd expected to, so I'm still hoping it'll get better as it goes along.)

If you mean the fairy ep, I was happy enough about the kid going with them--it's what she wanted--but not that her mother lost her lover as well. And yeah, the trailer for the week after was enough to make me decide to stop right there.

Ah, yeah, I meant the fairy ep. I thought you'd quit before that one.

The one after that... was every bit as much of a traditional horror story as the trailer suggested, and way more gross.

I thought they made the boyfriend just a bit too unsympathetic in that episode. He's unpleasant, whereas I think exasperated or not terribly well-equipped to handle this weird kid might have been more interesting. Also, I have borrowed the different ending that [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v came up with, where Estelle goes instead of the little girl.

I think it was obvious that Roy loved the girl's mother, but he didn't behave well with Jasmine, possibly due to her withdrawal and his inexperience with children. I don't think he was a bully like the schoolkids; his scenes with the mother at the BBQ were sympathetic.

I do like [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v's ending, and it would have given resonance to the 'loving forever' or 'till we die' thing (can't remember the words) that Jack had thoughtlessly promised her.

It's not just the horror I don't like in Torchwood, it's depressing nature of it (defeat and lack of hope) but I know I'm in a minority here since most people like B7 for those very reasons.

I think I understand what you mean. I thought it was the defeat and lack of hope that made me like B7, and I think that was the case once, and while I still like very dark stories, I think it's stories about resilience in the face of defeat and lack of hope that I really want now. Vila is definitely a character with that kind of story. Garak is another. Faramir too.

Vila is definitely a character with that kind of story.

Until season 4 when he seems to give up. I say 'seems' because I do have hope for him after GP; he has to have coped with a lot of bad things in his past - the JD wards, reprogramming, and a penal colony at 14 - and that's just what we know about.

Garak is another.

Garak is my favourite character from DS9. I always wanted more of him.
