Since it's Friday, and because I can make no major life decisions without consulting my friends' list, here's a poll.

[Poll #619818]

I find it strangely compelling rubbish

A hell of a lot more compelling than Rome. I notice that there are half a dozen of each to go. Maybe, in the continuing and totally maddening absence of The Sopranos, I can stick out both.

I'm loving Rome. I might feel completely differently if I had any idea what should be going on.

I keep thinking of that thing you wrote about it being like having a wobbly tooth you can't stop fiddling with, and since one of my recurring nightmare is about all my teeth falling out, I now have this vague feeling that if I keep on watching it all my teeth will fall out.

That icon is also strangely compelling, but in a not rubbish way.

Yeah, you are in for a treat when you see GoF, though Tennant isn't on screen quite often enough.

I would have preferred the grin from second picture down

but it's got writing on it

Yes, you should, despite the fact that Jack is indeed a rubbish character. :-D

I'm hooked on Lost, m'self. The show always opens quite well, and the cliffhangers are pretty strong (except for when they play out with soft rock music, which makes me pull out large amounts of my hair); but the middle of each episode seems to trail off somehow.

If they're capable of creating such good dramatic tension at the start and end, I'm mystified as to why they can't always carry it right through. Sure, I appreciate that you have to vary the tone in order for the drama to work, but a lot of the show is just uninteresting and unnecessary IMO.

You've put your finger right on it. The last one I saw (the one on E4 last week), it got past the opening, and I thought, "You know, I just can't be bothered sitting through this." I suspect it might have something to do with there being no real story arc, so the main content of each episode never really gets past banal.

It sounds like, in Doctor Who terms, a series comprising entirely of third episodes.

:-D Not a bad way of putting it, actually. I was just saying that part of its skill is in keeping you thinking that there's about to be a major pay-off.

I'm pretty certain that I'll carry on with it, now. It's definitely not the wonder that I'd been hoping for before it started, but it's good enough to keep me watching, and to keep giving me reason to think that it *could* be as good as I'd hoped. (Which means, of course, that, if it never is, I will be very peeved indeed...)

I'm not sure how Jack manages to be so rubbish. But at least there's Sayid. And Locke (though, er, not in the same way).

[Self-disclosing cough] There's Sayid and Sawyer.

I just keep waiting for Locke to do something really stupid, but I'm beginning to lose hope.

He does lots of really stupid things in his flashbacks. In which he looks disturbingly like Michael Keating does now.

Yes, it drove me nuts that they had so many Jack flash-backs when they had other much more interesting characters to tell us about. Dude, why did it take so long to get to Hurley?

You are, of course, supremely evil for not using ticky-boxes in your poll. Because, in that case, my answer would have consisted of:

Yes, 'The 4400' finishes soon and you'll need something to watch at breakfast, and you'll just get increasingly bitter about Jack being a rubbish character.

And the latter is a good thing.

What can I say? I know it's a fault in me. Ten Hail Marys!

Jack's a bore, but there are lots of other interesting characters, like Locke and Sawyer. Plus, pretty beaches.

I just can't help myself looking at Jack, but the character really is dreadful. Pretty beaches - good point.

I'm watching Lost season 2 and it's great; they've ramped up the plot and given us more characters. Besides, there's Hurley!

Besides, there's Hurley!

He and Locke should have their own spin-off.

Plot is something the show sorely needs, I think.

You'll get some! I think they got bogged down in backstory in season 1. I'm really enjoying the new things they're doing--and the new characters--in season 2. Yes, Locke and Hurley are wonderful in different ways and I hope they keep them (coz they're not afraid to kill people off).

Ew. We do not watch Lost for Jack. We watch Lost for Locke and Hurley. And if we need an eye-candy break, Sayid is not bad at all.

I can't help myself with Jack. I know it's a massive lapse of taste. But you are right that Locke and Hurley are the real reasons to watch.

Yay, you watch for those two as well! I admit it took me a while for Locke to grow on me but he did; I loved Hurley from the start and he just gets better. (I'm watching S2 from downloads and wow!)

Sawyer's nice to look at too (but probably not to know).

I think I must be a very stupid person, because I just can't get Lost. I started watching it twice, once on German TV, once on Hungarian Tv, and after the first couple of episodes, I just got lost... pardon the inevitable pun.

After the second try, I gave up on the series. There is mystery and there is mystery, and I guess my under-developed brain just isn't capable of dealing with all those flashbacks and the hints of what might be going on. *blinks ashamedly*
