There were so many wonderful things about Tolkien 2005 that it's hard to pick some out. Here are some highlights, in no particular order.

  • Driving down with [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin and [livejournal.com profile] the_wild_iris and sharing well-considered opinions on Harrison Ford

  • Meeting [livejournal.com profile] tyellas, [livejournal.com profile] ithilwen, and [livejournal.com profile] rcfinch

  • The astonishing Reduced Silmarillion Company, who were side-splittingly funny for 45 minutes in a room that increasingly felt like a Balrog was about to turn up

  • Being asked by a young Spanish gentleman where he could find the night life, since English girls "are easy"

  • Having a good laugh with some friends about the summary of a paper on sexploitation films and slash, and then having someone lean over and say, "Hi, I think you're talking about my paper..."

  • Seeing at least 150 people turn up for that paper, despite it having a post-watershed slot of 10pm

  • The grassroots slash-writers movement formed by [livejournal.com profile] dr_porn and [livejournal.com profile] tyellas after a frustrating panel on fandom

  • The costume extravanganza, which started on time and ended on time, and so must be unique in the history of conventions, and which served up oven-ready Elwing

  • Nailing the best television on campus to watch the Big Brother final with [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin

  • The lovely Aiglos people from Poland and their beautiful zine

  • The Dealers' Room, an Aladdin's cave of Tolkienalia, all of which I managed to resist

  • Excellent talks on: Tolkien, Adorno, Said and "late style"; male friendship in LotR; the LotR international audience project

  • The hugely competent chief steward Montserrat (16 years old)

  • Seeing Kasiopea after Alan Lee had bought one of her prints and told her how much he liked her art

  • Never entirely working out the layout of the building we were using ("Just keep turning right," [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin sensibly advised, would that I had listened)

  • [livejournal.com profile] tyellas's superb Arts and Crafts's presentation, in which technical problems were handled smoothly and confidently

  • Meeting Anke Eissmann, and getting to see - amongst others - the picture in this icon

  • The beautiful beadwork Ent in the art show

  • [livejournal.com profile] ithilwen's daily gift of blueberries, wisely making sure we received at least some vitamins

  • The Cambridge Tolkien Society's dramatization of parts of the BBC radio adaptation, which moved me to tears at one point (Theoden's death scene) and to laughter at another (the early arrival of the Rohirrim - oops with the sound effects!)

  • Getting in the wrong lift late at night with [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin, going down to the basement, and suddenly finding ourselves in a teen horror movie

  • [livejournal.com profile] rcfinch's thought-provoking presentation on themes of mortality and immortality in Tolkien and de Beauvoir

  • The auction, where a madness took me and I came away with an original Anke Eissmann (her, er, scribblings from the Pictionary round in the convention quiz)

  • The amazing hand-drawn family tree pinned up outside the Dealers' Room, showing the mortal and immortal descent of Eldarion, and how many Kings of the Mark you get for each generation of Chieftains of the Dunedain

  • Bouncing up and down in frustration so much in a panel on Tolkien and Pullman that [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin had to sedate me

  • Going to the Old Forest with [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin, [livejournal.com profile] merrymaia and[livejournal.com profile] the_wild_iris

  • Most stupid thing done by me not including the auction: failing to realize that when [livejournal.com profile] nickeyb said she was going to listen to a talk by "Priscilla", she meant Priscilla Tolkien... (*mourns*)

At least some readers of this journal might like to drop by [livejournal.com profile] dr_porn's journal. From his bio: "a film studies lecturer at De Montfort University, Leicester, England... researching Tolkien, Tolkien sexploitation films and Tolkien slash fiction. I'll be running a day school on slash at my university early next year, so get in touch if that interests you."

No, I was spared that indignity. The car proved immoveable.

It sounds a wonderful weekend in lots of ways. I'm glad there were so many good things.

I'm sure the young Spanish gentleman got all he deserved...

I know how you must have felt about the building. I never even really got the hang of the one at Redemption.

I'm glad you got to watch the BB final - I was wondering whether you would, when I was watching it.

I remember flailing at lot around that point where those two corridors met.

I know! What's really embarrassing is that, basically, those two corridors were all that that there was...

Blimey. When's the next convention?

Heehee, just kidding - I suppose you've had your fix for a while yet! But really, I've always wondered how these fanconventions go, and judgding from what you've mentioned here, it must be one of those overwhelmingly enriching experiences. And getting to meet all those lovely fandom people! :)

Scribblings or no, I'm sure any Anke Eissmann original must be of excellent quality. :P

It was a bit different from conventions I've been to in the past, in that it had a 'scholarly' side to it (although that side wasn't quite like academic conferences I've been to). Meeting all the lovely fandom people was the best bit :-)

"'beadwork Ent'?" she asks, interestedly.

Not that the rest of your report isn't fascinating, because it is--I had no idea such things were occurring in the world, and this event sounds stellar.

*goes to check out [livejournal.com profile] dr_porn's LJ.*

Thank you for the great report.

"'beadwork Ent'?" she asks, interestedly.

I thought of you when I saw it. I wish I could describe it properly. It was quite small - maybe eight inches long and four across - and was like a mask, really, done in various shades of brown and green beads. It all built up to the effect of an Ent's face. Oh, it had a dangly beard done in long beads! The creator had other beadwork pieces exhibited - wish I could remember her name so I could google.

Thank you for the description. It sounds wonderful.

Eight inches by four is a fairly large project by beadwork standards. It must have been quite a project.

It was the centrepiece of her display. I am kicking myself now I didn't jot down the name, and neither 'beadwork ent' nor 'beadwork Treebeard' and delivering on Google.

Your comeback to Spanish Guy was classic:

"London."

Why is England so far away and expensive to get to? *sigh*

Thanks for the highlights, it really does sound as if it was wonderful. That family tree sounds extremely tempting, as does the beaded Ent. And I wish I'd been at that slash lecture!

One day you'll get to come and do the Grand Tour.

The family tree was something else. It showed linear descent for Eldarion for all his mortal and immortal ancestors; but the descent for Melian was done by a small wheel at the top, showing its 'angelic' nature.

The bottom of the tree had the Chieftains of the Dunedain, the Princes of Dol Amroth, the Stewards, and the Kings of the Mark lined up alongside each other, and really brought home the longevity of the Northern Dunedain in comparison. I am hugely tempted to do something like this myself one day, but I think I'd be MAD.

I wish I'd been at that slash lecture!

You'd have loved it, and the slash writers gathering that followed. Make sure you take a look at [livejournal.com profile] dr_porn's journal.

I'm trying to imagine this, but what I'm envisioning is the most godawful party favor spinning noisemaker with pink wings painted on it...

*grinds teeth in frustration* Yep, it's clear: I wants this, my preciouss... What would it take to drive you mad so I don't have to do this by myself? I'll bribe Mr. Altariel if I have to!

Make sure you take a look at [info]dr_porn's journal.

I have, and I left comments, but since I'm a non-LJer, he has to find it in his inbox or whatnot and decide whether I'm a spammer or something. But good stuff it seems to be...

Heh, more tasteful - just a circle of cardboard with the names of the Valar and Maiar on, pinned on with one of those little pins that bend backwards (god, this is hard to describe!).

Tenure?

You and everyone else...

However, my dad at one time said he was awaiting official faculty appointment at Claremont Community College (http://www.claremontcommunitycollege.com/pages/1/index.htm), thatfine establishment (http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:kDoxRjakE4gJ:www.dailybulletin.com/Stories/0,1413,203~23112~2598967,00.html+%22Claremont+Community+College%22+when+you+have+to+go&hl=en) committed to intense testing of the thesis that humanity is the laughing animal.

Perhaps you'd like an inside reference to become tenured as the Ballyhoo Chair of Social Sciences? I could send you a mug...

Love it. Absolutely love it. Ballyhoo Chair of Social Science? As was said in the recent series of Doctor Who: "I got a first in jiggery-pokery!" "Oh yeah? I failed hullabaloo."

I must have sent you this.

One day, I promise, I will sit down with a huge pile of felt-tip pens and draw that family tree. But it's something I'll do when I'm retired (from the busy Ballyhoo Chair?!).
