Naturally we watched Eurovision last night, and enjoyed chanting [livejournal.com profile] communicator's suggested incantation. Eurovision is not so gently revenged by leaving me humming, of all things, the Polish entry.

Far more of you than expected proved frighteningly sensible in the Friday afternoon dilemma poll, although a brief surge of support secured a win for the Doughnut Plan. In the end, I couldn't be bothered to go out to the shop, and compromised with some biking and a sandwich.

In other news, the Mighty Saints prevailed against local rivals Wigan to win the Challenge Cup. This is a particularly serious local rivalry: my brother claims Wigan's 1989 defeat of St Helens 27-0 contributed directly to his decision to emigrate to New Zealand.

... and the bus service in our home city, which ain't anywhere near either of them, went for a burton in consequence. I'm not bitter, just because this is going to happen EVERY WEEKEND THIS MONTH....

Ouch, yes. Apparently the crowd was 73,000 which, given that the population of St Helens is only something like 177,000 means East Lancs must have felt empty. I hope everyone behaved well and that anyone who behaved badly was from Wigan.

I just took a look at some of the video clips on that page. Are these the new European talents? ^_^;; The Polish entry is rhythmical and easy-to-remember... but now it echoes in my mind... and echoes... and echoes... o_O;; The Ukranian singer was kind of hot. ;) The Greek entry was pathetic!

I can't get that Polish one out of my head either, grrr....! The Greek was was pretty awful - he didn't perform it well either. I thought the German song was probably the best of the bunch, although the performance was a bit dodgy in places. The UK song was nice, if a bit bland, but a considerable improvement on last year's horror *cringes in remembrance*

Thank you! Max had no great stage show, but he is an awesome singer, and I love his song. And the winner reminded me of Xena...*shivers*

Is he a well known singer in Germany? The UK entry had appeared in a TV show called 'Fame Academy', which was a kind of combination between a song-writing/singing school and a talent contest.

No, he is not - he came from a casting show by a famous comedy showmaster in Germany (it was meant as a joke first, but then more and more good young singers joined in). And the showmaster is a very good musician, too, and he wrote the song, and Max won the contest (he has just finished school). And the song is a great hit over here.

I'm glad the song is a hit - it does deserve it.

Glad you enjoyed the annual kitsch-fest. I didn't see it, but it sounded like there was so much political voting going on that the results could have been decided without any singing :) *Mildly surprised the British didn't get null points again*

The political voting was hilarious, completely shameless.

It looked a close thing for some time. Although this year the British entry did manage to sing in tune.

We ended up just seeing the vote results (forgot it was on and we were watching Monsters Inc), so contented ourselves with doing a Trinny and Susannah on the outfits, makeup and accessories of those annnouncing the results in each country.

However, there were heartfelt cheers when Sweden (bless them) gave Norway three points, meaning that there was no-one with nul points.

Usually the best tactic.

We were pleased about that too. Hurrah for Sweden!

Glad the mantra come in handy. I was in another part of the house, but the bits I heard seemed quite dire. 'Shake shake shake shake shake me amore' (or it may have been 'shaky amour')

It reminded me a bit of 'Channel Nine' on the Fast Show. 'Boutros, boutros, ghali'.

That could be any one of a number of them. Except the Polish one, which I can tune quite well.

Good news about St H. Although your brother's decision to emigrate could be a grim portent, given Leyton Orient's miserable season. They are languishing near the bottom of Division 3. (Commiserations also to [livejournal.com profile] communicator, on account of Scunthorpe lying in similar doldrums).
