On your current playlist, hit shuffle and pick the first twenty songs on the list (no matter how cheesy or embarrassing), and write down your favourite line of the song. Try to avoid putting the song title in the line. Then have your friends comment and see if they know the songs.

I only did ten, I'm a bit knackered tonight.

  1. I’m a professional cynic, but my heart’s not in it
  2. On a blanket in the cooling sand you and your friend agreed that the stars were so many there they seemed to overlap
  3. Daddy’s a dark riddle, Mama’s a headful of bees
  4. The songs pour down like silver, they can only break my heart
  5. You are in my blood like holy wine, you taste so bitter and so sweet
  6. Betty Ford, oh won’t you be my valentine?
  7. They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem
  8. Fuck the stewards, a trip to Lourdes might give the old fuckers the power of sight
  9. You look like the perfect fit for a girl in need of a tourniquet
  10. I saw two shooting stars last night, I wished on them, but they’re only satellites... it’s wrong to wish on space hardware

The song, yes. If it's a band too, then it's the first I've heard of it.

Yep, a goth band (but the line is from the Leonard Cohen song).

I think 1 is Blur's Country House? 10 is Kirsty MacColl's New England?

Get some sleep! (Like you haven't already thought of that.)

You got both! (And it was Kirsty's New England and not Billy Bragg's version too.)

I went straight to bed and slept for ages.

#5 - yay, another "Case of You" lover!
#7 - I know this, I know this, it's just on the tip of my tongue... Leonard Cohen?
#8 - God bless the Pogues
#9 - Aimee Mann
#10 - Billy Bragg (I didn't know he'd done this as a duet with Kirsty, must search it out)

Yep, 'Sisters of Mercy'.

#8 - God bless the Pogues

Amen.

#10 - Billy Bragg (I didn't know he'd done this as a duet with Kirsty, must search it out)

Kirsty released it as a single in 1984 (tho' not dueting with BB), and he wrote a couple of extra verses for her. (More here.)

Also meant to say, Kirsty's version of 'A New England' is on her Best Of album, 'Galore'.
