The Mithril Awards 2004 are now open for nominations.

I greatly enjoyed my participation in last year's awards. The process of nominating stories for consideration gave me an opportunity to go back to many stories I had discovered when I first began to read Tolkien fanfiction. I judged in two categories containing stories which I would not usually have read, and so discovered more fiction that way. Reading through the eventual lists of shortlisted and winning stories led me to such treasures as Teasel's On Gorgoroth Plain and Vulgarweed's The Ring and the Crown (note: this is an adult-rated fic), neither of which I had read before.

I was also lucky enough to win a judged award and a voters' choice award. In the case of the judged award, this was for a story which I thought had been written largely for my own pleasure. I was surprised and delighted to discover that it had even been nominated.

Here is some information about this year's awards, from [livejournal.com profile] mithrilawards:

"Visit the online nominations form at the awards site to put forward your choices of fanfiction, poetry & research articles based on any of JRR Tolkien's works for this year's awards.

Any work completed between 1 April 2003 and 1 April 2004 is eligible for nomination. Nominations close at midnight EST on 9 May 2004.

You can also help to decide the new Voters' Choice categories for this year by visiting our Voters' Choice poll."

It has been my experience that trying to contribute actively in a fandom can sometimes feel like a thankless (and heart-breaking) activity. Thank you to the Awards Committee for their efforts last year, for working diligently towards improving the awards since then, and for taking on the organizational task again this year.

Hear, hear!

And thanks for drawing our attention to them, A.
