Today is the second birthday of the Henneth Annûn mailing list.

To celebrate, the current and former list owners asked for pieces about two or more of the following: Galadriel, Éowyn, birthdays, Henneth Annûn, or gift-giving. I only had time for a drabble.

Gold Leaf

In April, it burst into golden flowers. It grew throughout that rich and radiant summer and, come the fall, its long leaves glowed in the last sun of the year.

When Sam touched this treasure, one came away, like a rope at its master’s call. He used it as a bookmark, had it to hand as he embellished the lines of his own tree. The children liked to hold it – Elanor, Goldilocks, down to Baby Tom; Elfstan too when his turn came.

The book he gave to his own golden girl. The leaf he took with him, returning the gift.

Edited to add: flicking through the Appendices over lunch, I read this entry:
S.R. 1420 April 6: The mallorn flowers in the Party Field.
Which I didn't know yesterday (April 6th), when I wrote and posted this drabble. FI-COAT.

Thanks. I've just discovered the joys of icon-making...and of compulsively fiddling with them *g*.

It's a marvellous time waster. I pretend I'm learning a useful new skillset.

Or that it's a contemporary artform in which I ought to participate to be a fully rounded human being.

LOL. I hadn't thought of that one. Another excellent excuse to waste more time.

That's not one of mine, though I wish it was. That's one of [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_'s who makes much better icons than I will ever be able to. I can aspire though *g*.

*sigh* Her stuff is *really* classy.

There's only one answer: we should both put more hours in play^^^ um, *working* on icons.

Nice drabble!

Hard to believe the list has been around for 2 years now, isn't it?

It's weird - I can remember being excited that the list of members had gone onto a second page (so 30+)!

Glad you liked the drabble :-)

It really is too bad Yahoogroups has such limited space for messages; it would be fun right now to go back through those first weeks' postings and re-read them.

Ah, the good old days...

I don't often 'do' hobbits

...which may be why I appreciated it so much!

Personally, I do hobbits as often as I can (ahem).

Beautiful, with so many wonderful allusions and details, exactly what I like best in a drabble. You're on a drabbling roll!

Glad you like it! Yes, I do seem to be drabbling like mad at the moment. My other writing isn't looking so great, but never mind.

Do you think this would fit for the 'Change of Seasons' theme at LotR100?

how beautiful! I love The leaf he took with him, returning the gift.

we were in a similar spot, indeed - and I ma not usually so weel disposed toward Galadriel, but Sam insisted.

Happy Anniversary!!

Lovely! The last sentence is a fine closing sentence.

Btw, have I told you that your icon is simply *perfect*? *_* Light and beauty and elegance... so Altariel, so Galadriel!

Glad you liked it! :-D

The picture on the icon comes from [livejournal.com profile] arwen_elvenfair, who has been posting some beautiful screen grabs from RotK for use as icon bases. I realized I didn't have a Galadriel icon, and really liked the composition of this one.

I see you're celebrating HA's birthday in the hobbit fashion - aren't we supposed to be giving you gifts?

Either way, this is beautiful. I do love Sam when he's well written.

I don't risk writing hobbits very often, but Mr. Altariel was very insistent that I write this one.

Glad you liked it :-)

Very nice little drabble! I would imagine that hobbits are very hard to write credibly; but this deceptively simple piece caught Sam perfectly.

Seeing this again on lotr100 made me remember that I'd never commented on it :( I really like how the imagery is so delicate, tying the piece together without being obvious or insistent. Also the idea that the tree is specially responsive to Sam - that's lovely.

Thank you :-) Mr A. requested I write something about Sam, and I wanted to write Galadriel for Mike.
