I'm going to the Oxford Tolkien Spring School at the end of March, held at the English Faculty.

Does anyone have any recommendations for B&Bs in Oxford, preferably fairly central? Or other suggestions for places to stay? Thanking you!

Since Hilary Term ends in early march, you could try asking a few colleges if they rent their rooms during the holidays. I know that LMH used to do that, but I'm not sure if it was just for big academic conferences and the like.

Also, the programme looks great! I met Stuart Lee once, ages ago, and he was awfully nice, IIRC.

The colleges are now organising renting rooms out centrally through a commercial agency - see www.oxfordrooms.co.uk .

Ooh, thank you, that's great. My geography of Oxford is non-existent: I'm guessing most of the main colleges would be walking distance to the English faculty?

The English Faculty is on the eastern side of the city centre, in the St Cross Building on the northern corner of St Cross Road and Manor Road. It's near St Catherine's (Catz) and nearer to offsite accommodation belonging to New College, Balliol and Merton. Other colleges in reasonably close proximity are Linacre, New College itself, and Magdalen; but the rest aren't that far away.

He is - heard him speak at Aston in '05, and talked to him afterwards.

Ah! It will be out of term - that's great! Thank you!

Yes, I'm very excited about the programme. Now that I've admitted to myself that I want to hang out talking about Tolkien whenever I have the chance, it's made life a lot easier!

St Michael's B&B, on St Michael's Street, is as cheap and central as you could wish.

No suggestions of places to stay, but if you have time for a coffee or something it would be lovely to meet you.

I stayed at one called Newton House, I think, down St. Aldates (or Abingdon Road). It's not as central as St. Michaels, but easily walkable. Was a perfectly acceptable B&B as I recall.
