The Hobbit

We saw The Hobbit!

I'd really dialled my expectations down to zero, so I came out a happy bunny (word chosen intentionally).

It's LOOOOOOONG. Really, long. Having said that, it isn't dull. The pacing is steady but not slow, and while there are too many warg battles, they don't go on FOREVER like Helm's Bloody Deep.

It's almost beat-for-beat the same as FotR: you're ticking off the episodes and following the same rise and fall: "Oh, they should be getting to Rivendell round... about... now!" Thorin's story is a counterpoint to Aragorn's: king in waiting, etc. etc.

Martin Freeman is amazing. I mean, just terrific. Riddles in the Dark is pitch perfect.

They've found someone who can write dialogue. Glory be to God! So when people say things, other people react to what they've said, and then other people react to that. You won't believe the difference this makes. The fact they've got plenty of time (did I mention it was long?) means you can get all these conversations in full. At the back of your mind, you're thinking, "Oh, if only they'd been able to do The Lord of the Rings with as much space as this, we wouldn't have got Fake Faramir and Daft Denethor..." but then I suppose we'd only be partway through The Two Towers right now and perhaps all killing each other.

The entry to Rivendell is wonderful (although Rivendell itself still looks like it's made from pine cut-offs and MDF). Rhosgobel was a tad Brothers Hildebrandt for my taste.

The dwarves are chiefly distinguishable by their hair, apart from Thorin (the Northern one), Balin (the Scottish one), the one played by James Nesbitt (the Irish one), and the surprisingly cute one. There's a fat one too, I assume that's Bombur and we'll see more of him.

Radagast! Fuck yeah!

Visually, Dol Guldur is pretty unimaginative. Ruined towers, yawn, yawn. I'd have liked something more Deco or preferably Brutalist. You know, like a big seventies shopping centre. And Jackson needs to give up on the stupid clichéd pieces of direction, like having people shout, "Noooooooooo!" when they see something bad happen, or showing a child's toy being ground into the dirt by marauding villains, etc. etc. Really, Peter, you can do better than that.

I like all the additions of the White Council. Perhaps it makes the film less "Hobbity", but I really like the getting this bigger canvas, which gives a sense of Eriador being a battleground, and really shows how the story of how Bilbo got the Ring has huge significance. It's like they've made the version of the book that you read when you come back to it after having read The Lord of the Rings, rather than the one you read when you were tiny. Also "The Quest of Erebor" from Unfinished Tales is just about my favourite piece of Tolkien fanfiction, and here it is up on a big screen - yay.

You know, I really liked it. I even didn't mind Radagast's sled drawn by Rhosgobel Rabbits. It's so outrageously daft that it just made me laugh.

All in all, if you think of other major film trilogies that have been followed by a second major trilogy, then this is certainly no Phantom Menace. It's long but not boring, it's got a good heart even in the silly bits, and Martin Freeman makes it worth every penny. Imagine if they gave him this much to do in Sherlock.

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I probably won't be seeing it until the new year.

As soon as I heard that Martin Freeman had been cast as Bilbo, I thought that he should be perfect, and it's good that he seemingly lives up to my high expectations.

There's lots to like about it, and that broadly outweighs what's daft. I'll probably go and see it again after Christmas. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for the detailed review - I will probably only be able to go see it after Christmas, and I have been trying to imagine scenes based on the soundtrack (which I received on Wednesday and which is a marvel!), so this helps :) And yay for lots of Martin Freemann

The soundtrack is good - not many surprises, but working from a basic level of yay-ness. Martin Freeman really is super. Enjoy it when you see it!

I'm already chomping at the bit to see it again (and again), because there was so much that passed far too quickly, and now that the starry-eyed "back in Middle-earth" feeling has passed somewhat, I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy it in a far more detailed manner...

I loved the White Council as well. It could have done with a bit more meat on its bones, but having it at all was amazing, and the sense of danger it conveyed (especially already possessing the hindsight of Saruman being a traitor - we did for LotR as well, I realize, but we had yet to see PJ's version of it) was breathtaking. It's a pity that it clashed with the danger being mostly cartoonish villains (looking at you, Goblin King); I'm not yet sure what to make of that, but it might change in movies II and III.

But on the whole, definitely worth going, for the scenery and Martin Freeman if nothing else.

I agree that the White Council scenes worked so well at conveying a sense of something bad about to happen. You see a warmer, less corrupted Saruman, which I really liked too. I was fine with the Goblin King, although he was Jabba the Hutt right down to having his own Salacious Crumb.

I'll definitely go back: probably leave it a week or two, but I want to see it on the big screen again before it disappears.

There's definitely something theatrical about the Goblin King in the book, so he seemed fine to me - and I loved his dewlap.

The dewlap was brilliant! So 'orrible!

I'm happily reading everyone's opinion - and the people I expect to agree with, like you, all seem to like it. Which makes me look forward to actually getting to see it sometime over Christmas!

My fear was that it was going to be an awful turkey, but in fact it's got a lot of charm and sweetness. Enjoy when you see it!

Seeing your icon, I can't help wishing that someone would persuade Peter Jackson to make Noggin the Nog his next project. :)

Oh yes! That would certainly be well worth watching!

I won't be able to see it for at least another week so it's good to read a detailed and positive review as it means I can start to get a little bit excited.

It's like they've made the version of the book that you read when you come back to it after having read The Lord of the Rings, rather than the one you read when you were tiny.

I'm definitely on board with that :)

I had really damped down all my hopes, so it would have had to be a stinker of the first order. In fact it's really rather charming.

I'm seeing it tonight! Then again over the holidays, with relatives.

Would that Tolkien had done likewise...

Yes, steady now, don't get too excited.

Ha! Exactly! The epitome of EVIL.

Well... I must admit, I had no desire to see this, but am getting caught up in everyone's excitement, and now your review is encouraging. It's a relief after all the bad ones I've seen (from pros who are trying to make themselves look smart and all, but still). I have less mental imagery invested in The Hobbit than in LoTR.

I have much less investment in The Hobbit than in LotR, so that helped. It's fine. It's not superb, but it's jolly, and it plays nicely off the earlier films.

A very encouraging review. I'm seeing it next Sunday with my youngest daughter. I have been in two moods about this. Telling myself it will all be fun on the day, while not really liking the "colour palette" of the clips I have seen so far. I can't watch it in 3D due to my peculiar eyesight.

I felt the whole thing should have had more autumnal colours: russets and browns and yellows and oranges and reds, because that's how the book feels to me. So many films and TV shows go for teal-and-orange these days.

I can't stand 3D (gives me a headache) and would always avoid by choice. I also hate wearing glasses over my glasses.

The reviews on my flist have been a mixed lot (except about Martin Freeman, big surprise...) so I'm looking forward to it.

Oh god, The Brothers Hildebrant. Now that you've mentioned that, I can't unsee it.

Also, simply hearing the word "Gondolin" on the big screen made me so happy.

Oops, sorry!

I know what you mean about hearing "Gondolin" said. And it's exactly the same thrill I get from hearing Gimli say it:

The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.

That hint at the wider world beyond. Lovely.

Oh how perfect! The structural similarities to FOTR made me eyeroll as well.

The Rhosgobel Rabbits were just hilarious. I can't figure if Radagast is this goofy in the original? Or have they chucked in some Tom Bombadil homage there?

I don't think Radagast gets the space to be so goofy in the original! Isn't it just a handful of lines in flashback during the Council of Elrond? But Sylv did it perfectly. (The only thing I didn't like was the name of the hedgehog: Sebastian isn't Middle-earthy at all. But I can see why they did it.)

I want Sebastian to lead a battalion of hedgehogs rolling themselves like caltrops under the paws of the wargs in the Battle of the Five Armies. Or, if that's too far for them to walk, hurling themselves into the faces of the forces defending Dol Guldur.
