Mithrandir, finishing his account, earned much praise, for this was not a story Edoras had heard before. Then the Lady Éowyn, lifting her golden cup, said, “I too have a dragon-tale, which our people brought from the North with this treasure.” But her brother stayed her, saying, “Not all in our company would welcome the reminder. Master Gimli needs no more reason to rebuke me!”

The Lady Éowyn was ashamed, but Gimli, rising from his seat, bowed deeply. “We have no jewel in our treasury to match your sister’s courtesy!” And when her guests departed, she gave him the cup.

Gimli has quite a knack for charming the ladies, whether elven or human. :)

I liked those pieces. I have to admit that I winced at the use of "gifted", though. I may be an old stick-in-the-mud, but I'm afraid that the use of "gift" as a verb is a pet hate of mine.

I suspect the meaning of 'gift' as a verb may go back a long way. Gift and give both come from the O.E. noun giefu.

1550 was the date I found. Tolkien doesn't use it as a verb.

My 1995 edition of the Concise Oxford includes the use of "gift" as a verb, so my antipathy is clearly no more than prejudice on my part. (But I suspect that it's a prejudice that Tolkien would have shared. :)

I did a little fact-checking and Tolkien doesn't use "gift" as a verb in any of the major works. So you're quite right to hesitate at it! Its earliest usage as a verb seems to be 1550, which is late by Tolkien's standards and certainly not Rohirric!

Éowyn and Gimli are two of my four favourite characters in LotR, so it's good to see them interacting. (The other two are Merry and Faramir.)

I haven't written much about Merry. A couple of short exchanges with Faramir in a very early story.

If you want a long, really good read in which those characters appear, although not as the leads, you might enjoy azalaisdep's Amid the Powers and Chances of the World. And you'd surely enjoy her Gimli and Legolas drabble sequence Together We Will Take the Road....

Use of 'gift' as a verb jars on me too, although I'm aware of its history of usage in British English in referring to the actions of those who have made a 'deed of gift' etc.

I think I may amend "gifted" to "gave". It's a plainer word that does the job, and that's always better.
