These Ithilien drabbles just don't stop coming.

Role Reversal

Emyn Arnen, early in the Fourth Age

Perhaps, given their heritage and the world they inhabited, the games were inevitable. Under the bright sunlight of the new age, they rode and quested and triumphed in safety. They scaled mountains together, broke bridges together, rode out to relieve a city together.

And, of course, there was the very best game of all.

“You look upon a woman!” Morwen cries out across the radiant garden. “Begone, foul dwimmerlaik!”

“Is that me?” Elboron asks, uncertainly. Sometimes the women of his family are a challenge.

What?” his sister says. Sometimes her chief lieutenant is obtuse. “Don’t be stupid! You’re the hobbit!”

Hoh, lovely. Very true to the inner life of small children, believe me. Poor Elboron - yes, the women of that line are never going to give their menfolk an easy ride!

Most of all, I loved:

Under the bright sunlight of the new age, they rode and quested and triumphed in safety.

It's such a happy thought that that was the outcome of all that danger and death.

Very true to the inner life of this small adult!

It's such a happy thought that that was the outcome of all that danger and death.

:-) I'm glad you liked it, Az.

Yay, another Ithilien drabble!

LOL (literally!) because of that very last line, which reminded me of, "Oh my god, I'm the tin dog."

Chief lieutenants these days are certainly not what they used to be.

We watched "School Reunion" this very morning!

It's true - whatever the benefits of the Fourth Age, there's a distinct lack of proper minions and lackeys.

We watched 'School Reunion' last week, in honour of Elisabeth Sladen, after watching the re-run of 'Hand of Fear'.

Had you seen 'Hand of Fear' before? She's lovely in it.

Not since the original broadcast and my recollections were a bit fuzzy. But yes, she was great in it.

Heh! I bet Morwen more than managed to hold her own against her two brothers - poor flabber-gasted Elboron.

I know, poor Bron! It's all slightly bewildering. I'll have to think about what they're like when they're older.
