This interview with Tolkien is brilliant on so many levels. How many? Can't count.

Part of a larger archive of interviews etc. with writers.

That bit particularly heartens me. If even Tolkien can get confused about the legendarium...

But my absolute favourite bit is the montage of shots of him enjoying his dinner.

I love the pair of communist students sitting in the gardens of the Oxford Union. Perhaps it is a personal shortcoming, but it is not a way I thought to read the text, although they're oddly prescient about some things.

They are hilarious. Also the quiveringly angry one with the fringe.

I particularly enjoyed the point where the one on the left explains that he's never read Tolkien, despite having spent some time slagging him off on political grounds. I wonder if her ever met Germaine Greer?

(Oh, and the rest of his little exposition is just perfect: how dreadfully dull for this refined young socialist to have to interact with the lower classes, and listen to the tedious problems of agricultural workers.)

What a splendid programme! Tolkien came across as rather more charming than I had expected - quite down-to-earth about his work. I loved his horror at the idea of going to a club where everyone would have to speak Elvish: "It's much too complicated, and I haven't finished it yet".

Yes, I liked him more than I was expecting. He came across as quite shy, which is always endearing.

I have crossed Tolkien off my list of people to avoid once I've discovered time travel.

I'd ask if I could tag along, but I think I'd only alarm him, what with the fanfiction and being a girl. But give him a peck on the cheek from me.

From the linked webpage: "John Izzard meets with JRR Tolkien..."

Oh dear! I bet Tolkien is turning in his grave. :)
