I've never watched the State Opening of Parliament before. Grown-ups are funny.

Loving that icon!

Beat me to it.

Of course. those at the State Opening can't hope to match the Time Lords when it comes to silly hats.

How are hats involved in that? *clueless foreigner*

Real jewels? Wouldn't that be rather heavy and liable to crash to the ground? Also, neck pain?

This is why the Queen always looks pissed off.

I watched it in 1997 so I could wave when Keith arrived in the Lords. Of course, now he's in the Lords full time.

My favourite bit is how they take an MP hostage at the palace, to ensure they get the Queen back safely. Politics used to be so much more exciting that it is today.

I also liked the Beefeaters taking their little lamps to go looking for bombs and Catholics and that kind of thing.

UK Parliament? I've never seen it before myself. Canada's edition tends towards hat-less openings. Are we missing out?

The number of occasions on which that icon is scarily appropriate is, well, scary!

I should probably just make it the default...

I couldn't not have My, really. For one thing, I don't want to get on her bad side.

I was wondering earlier this week when people stopped wearing hats as a matter of course. Now they seem to be some sort of fashion statement if people wear them at all.

(Also, I wanted to contribute this icon -- hats are of the good!)

It's very noticeable how, when you see photos of crowds that were taken in the 1930s or earlier, almost everyone is wearing a hat, not just the women but the men as well.

I bet it was sometime during the sixties, when everything got more casual.

Very good icon!

Grown-ups? Not sure many of that bunch qualify - except, of course, for Her Majesty.

Ooh, they should invite me, I could wear my sparkly but inaccurate Aussie flag baseball cap. I also love that the UK Parliament has a Flickr account; so *that's* what they do all day... :-)
