I was supposed to be seeing Pirates of the Caribbean this evening, but I've come down with some nasty little virus, transported back from the US by Mr A., who acquired it on an internal flight somewhere between California and Texas. He's been ill all week, while I've just had a bad sore throat, but this evening I went all flaky after the massive exertion of walking to the shop and bringing back a bag of potatoes.

So instead of going to the cinema (*sob*), I'm rereading Bujolds. Diplomatic Immunity arrived this morning (I was waiting for the UK paperback edition to match my set, but caved in after prompting over the weekend). A new Bujold always necessitates a reread of favourite bits of earlier ones, which is not a hardship since I love them. Today I was mostly rereading Barrayar, Memory, and - of course - A Civil Campaign. And started the new one.

Just as well you're staying home; it sounds like a nasty little virus. And spending the evening reading science fiction isn't a bad way to pass the time. PotC will certainly be playing for a long while; you'll have plenty of time to catch it.

Hope you're soon feeling much better!

I'm sorry you couldn't make it. And even sorrier that you're not well. :-( Hope you and Mr A. both make a speedy recovery. And if you need chocolate, let me know...

The film was highly enjoyable; a spoiler-free review to follow tomorrow, hopefully. But it's safe to say that I'll be up for a second viewing once you're ok again. ;-)

Oooh, that sounds like a jolly good idea! Will look forward to reading your thoughts on the film when I get back on Monday.

Do you want to come, too? (Up to you.) No idea when it'll be, but certainly not before next week, anyway.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and it wasn't a disappointment after all the anticipation. And also glad you're up for a second viewing! :-D

Thanks - I seem to be feeling a lot better today, but just in case I'm going to take it easy. I'm going to a performance of 'Macbeth' tonight at one of the colleges, and don't want to get knackered before then.

Hopefully he manages to act a bit too. I'm mostly going for the Depp-lurve, I must admit.

For me, he will always be Edward Scissorhands.

He's fantastic in it. I'll get round to doing some comments tonight, so I won't say too much here. But he steals the show, and is a total delight. And I don't know whether it's the whole louche thing that he's got going, or what, but he's also pretty scrummy.

Which reminds me: I had somehow forgotten until he appeared onscreen that Jack Davenport is in it as well. What a totty-fest!

Ooops, it wasn't actually clear from all the 'he's who I was talking about in the first paragraph. Johnny Depp. Sorry.

I borrowed a sentence of yours in that Faramir essaylet I mentioned, but I acknowledged it. Hope that's OK.

Sure! No problem.

'Macbeth' was great - it was in the grounds of Girton College. Victorian gothic revival red brick affair. The chap playing Macbeth was particularly good (loads better than Sean Bean was!), and the chap playing MacDuff was splendidly AmDram: when he learnt of the death of Lady MacDuff and the Dufflings, he howled out his lines, and gave us the three-stage hands to head, fall to knees, flat on face affair. Magic.

Isn't he? Shame about the wig in this. Made me want to go and watch Ultraviolet again. Not to mention The Talented Mr Ripley. Mmmm.

Just to say that altariel and I currently thinking of Monday, Tuesday or Thursday next week for PotC. If you do fancy it, is any of those any good for you? Though we're both happy to wait if some other time would be better for you.

Thanks, yes, any of those evenings is fine. I don't have any evening commitments at the moment!

Great. Should we go for next Tuesday, then? Next question: do you have any preference for which showing? There's one at 6pm (finishes 8.43pm) and another at 8.30pm (finishes 11.13pm).

I imagine you'll soon fix that with some classes...!

I have a slight preference for 6pm, but will yield to the later showing if public opinion is against me.

I would prefer the later showing, on the grounds of Not Having To Rush Home From Work, and Eating At A Sensible Hour. But can work around these issues if necessary.

glitterboy, looks like you're going to have the casting vote ;)

Do either of you mind if I bring the BoT as well?

I certainly don't, anyway. So long as he doesn't mind the rest of us drooling... ;-)

Sorry, I was going to get back to you anyway. The later showing sounds best, then. So that's 8.30pm on next Tuesday.

Altariel and I are planning to get some food and drink in the Burleigh Arms on Newmarket Road (sort of just behind the Grafton Centre) beforehand. Don't know whether you fancy that, or joining partway through? Suggesting timings/possible meeting points:

7.00pm onwards - Burleigh Arms
8.10pm - Foyer of the cinema

Being lazy about queues etc, I normally sort out tickets in advance. Do you want me to get them for you and the BoT as well?

Re: tickets, we usually book ours over the web and get them from the machine when we arrive. So we'll do that again this time, probably the simplest way.

Re: pub, We haven't been there before - is it likely to be particularly busy (read: smoky) on a Tues evening? And what's the food like?

Re: Booking tickets over the web. Too right: that's the only way to go! Ok, that's fine by me. Altariel, I'll sort out tickets for you and me.

Re: pub. Busy/smokey: almost certainly not (i.e. not unless there's a freak coincidence of a coach party arriving while we're there). Food is standard pub fare: sandwiches, burgers, omelettes, pizzas, pies, curry, pasta, quiches, salads, and steaks. Some of it's made inhouse, some of it's bought. Doesn't aim to be a culinary revelation, but it's reliably good. Sorry, please don't feel obliged: it was just a thought. We'll do that anyway, so it's entirely up to you.
