Hurrah! An OBE for novelist and poet Peter Dickinson!

Over the past year or so, I've been working my way through his terrific crime novels (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] gerald) and his extraordinary children's books (with more than a little help from [livejournal.com profile] the_wild_iris). BookMooch recently supplied me with his trilogy for teenagers The Changes, which I remember distinctly seeing when it was adapted for television in the mid-Seventies. (According to this site, there may have been repeats 18 months later, but that still puts my age somewhere between 3 and 4-and-a-half, so you can assume it was distinctive and memorable.) I hope this prompts a DVD release.

I distinctly remember those opening titles, but not much about the series (television did raise me, but it must have been broadcast in Australia (where I grew up) when I was pretty young--I wasn't born when it was originally made).

I do seem to remember it was very scary.

Ooh, I wonder when it was transmitted. A lot of BBC stuff got sold to Australia, got sold worldwide in fact (how missing bits of Doctor Who have been retrieved).

Yes, in my yoof the ABC (one of two channels) played a bunch of BBC content. Grange Hill, Doctor Who (every night at 6pm! I was fondest of Tom Baker because of the jellybabies), Worzel Gummidge (also terrified the bejesus out of me--I was obviously a delicate child), The Goodies (on permanent repeat--I could recite the dialogue in some episodes).

Also Monkey. You've reminded me that Grange Hill was on, but I don't actually remember anything about it, unlike Doctor Who, The Goodies, and Monkey.

Oooh, Monkey, how could I have forgotten Monkey (born from an egg on a mountain top)? And G-Force. G-Force was awesome.

I remember the theme song from Grange Hill but I think the storylines were over my head.

Apparently quite a lot of Grange Hill can now be viewed on YouTube...

Worzel Gummidge was HORRIBLE. I hated it as a kid.

The Blue Hawk! That's the only one of his YA that I have read -- it might have been published in the Ballentine "Unicorn Head" imprint, which means I bought it a long, long time ago. :-) I still have it, so I'm due for a reread.

I suppose the fact that my high school sports teams were the Bluehawks might have something with the attraction I felt for the title? :-) The name of my little town (21 in my graduating class) meant 'nesting place of the blue heron' in Dakota... the heron/hawk change was for macho sports reasons I'm sure!

His mysteries ar the Peter Diamond ones, no? I think I've read most of them.

The Blue Hawk is terrific! I have a Puffin paperback, with beautiful black and white drawings.

His detective is James Pibble, although I haven't read those yet, I've been reading the stand-alone ones. (I think Peter Lovesey writes about Peter Diamond?)

That TV series somehow passed me by, probably cexause it was shown at a time when I would still have been travelling home from work. Many years ago I read a friend's copy of his adult SF nocel "The Green Gene", which was both good and rather strange.

My siblings were teenagers by that point, so I'm guessing they were watching it and I happened to be in the room.

I still have The Green Gene to look forward to!

Yay! Tulku, The Seventh Raven, The Dancing Bear, Eva, all extraordinary books. Well deserved recognition!

The Dancing Bear is the one I'm going to read next! I found a lovely Puffin edition with some gorgeous illustrations.

Excellent news! I devoured the Changes trilogy as a teenager. I'm so glad you mentioned Dickinson (for whom I'm very pleased) because as a result I've just discovered there is a sequel to The Ropemaker, another personal favourite. :)

I hadn't heard - congratulations to PD!

I should thank you for introducing me to his books. I'm more than happy to share any that fall to my own book-buying habit :)

I'm just finishing The Dancing Bear, which is terrific: set in Byzantium during Justinian's reign, when the Huns attack the city. He has this great note at the front saying that he's mostly made it up, because he's "not especially good at finding things out" *hearts PD*

Hurrah for Peter Dickinson!

The opening title sequence to The Changes was something I found utterly terrifying. I wonder what I'd think of them now. *hopes for DVD release*

I suspect someone is blocking them from releasing it, alas: usually an actor who doesn't want an earlier performance getting exposure again.

His range is amazing: I'm just finishing The Dancing Bear, set in Byzantium during the reign of Justinian. It's like a Rosemary Sutcliff novel, written by Peter Dickinson!

Welcome to the blog :-)

I've read most of his detective novels, some of which are set in alternative worlds and (almost) all of which have that wonderful Dickensonian feel to them.

Always wondered what it must be like in the Dickenson household, with husband PD and wife Robin McKinley. Never a dull moment, I should think.

I loved King and Joker! I haven't read the other AU one yet.

This post of his to her blog on the subject of his gong gives an interesting insight!
