We're in Paris for a few days (back tomorrow). Last night we went to see the new Star Trek film: thoroughly enjoyed it, and this despite the creepy guy in the next seat who spent the first hour pawing my leg. Nice. Anyway, the film was a hoot, lots of fun, exciting, full of space ships and things exploding, charming performances, and you spend the last half being really pleased for Simon Pegg, who gets to hang out with Kirk and Spock on the Enterprise, a bit like a Mary Sue.

Earlier today, the Rodin Museum. And now, cake.

"I LIKE this ship!"

Everyone in my party voted that we need to see more Simon Pegg in the inevitable sequels.

Eek! Were you able to swap places with [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel?

Enjoy the cake. West Indies one run behind with four second-innings wickets left.

Me, I would have quite loudly and in no uncertain terms told him to keep his hands off me and if he hadn't listened, I would have landed as hard a punch as I could possibly manage on the top of his kneecap. See how he likes having his leg fondled...

I've not yet gone to see Star Trek. I thinking about going, though.

My French wasn't up to telling him to fuck off, and I did want to watch the film and not get thrown out, so [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel gave him a seriously hard stare and - lo and behold, his hand fled back onto his own seat, and then he fell asleep. He legged it at the end of the film rather than risk any conversation with us.

The film is great :-)

The French may not wish to speak English, but most of them certainly understand enough to understand the words "fuck off". And good for [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel.

The film is indeed great, IMO the best so far.

Once I worked out what was going on (it wasn't clear at first whether we were just battling for control of the arm), I nudged Mr A. and he delivered the *hardest stare* I have ever seen him give. Bad Man's hand rapidly retreated.

Hurrah for the film! I did not know Simon Pegg was in it but this makes it so much better. Is he playing his character from Hyperdrive?

Ugh to the pawing man.

Edited because of failure to do words.

Simon Pegg is wonderful in it. He appears quite late on: I was very afraid he'd hit the cutting room floor - and then he turns up and is brilliant.

I've been hearing good things about the film. Even the newspaper critics, who tend to turn up their noses at SF films, seem to like it. I hope to see it before long.

Hope you enjoyed the cake - and the other delighrs of Paris too.

The cake - and Paris in general - was lovely.

Ugh to the man next to you. It's a shame you couldn't interpose [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel's leg, and then see Creepy Man's face, when the lights come up.

Yours is the second positive post about the film that I've seen today. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

I'm glad to hear that, between cinema-going, Culture, and cake, you're making the most of what Paris has to offer. Have fun!

It was enjoyable enough to watch Bad Man's face as Mr A. gave him a Death Stare. I've never seen anyone leave a cinema so quickly.

Enjoy it when you see it! Love the new icon!

Paris! Star Trek! What a cool combination.

I'm hearing almost universally good things about the movie. Might have to wander off and catch a show this evening.

Bon appétit!

For me, this evening, it's Orlando! Disney World! Software Conference! So, a bit on the strained side. Loved the movie, though.

Glad to hear it's worth the watching. The last few have been so darned bad, it was painful.

I just found this piece of Pegg joy.

Lots of people seem keen on this film - I might have to get off my shapely behind, and go and see this one in an actual cinema :)

Ooh, the Rodin museum! After all the enormous museums, it was such a nice change.

And yes! I was prepared to be happy if the Star Trek movie didn't bomb. This was a good few steps up from a simple "is not terrible." Though would it be too much to ask that Uhura actually gets to kick *some* ass? Even if only intellectually on screen for five minutes? Please?

And Simon Pegg was a hoot as Scotty.

I feel like I've done my duty by the big museums :-) The gardens were gorgeous.

And yes! I was prepared to be happy if the Star Trek movie didn't bomb.

That's exactly what we said going in: If this doesn't stink, we'll be happy. And then it was loads of fun! With luck, Uhura will have loads to do in the next one (fingers crossed there will be a next one...).

The gardens were gorgeous.

Lucky you, you got to see them while they were blooming. Everything was a bit sad when I went: drear and droopy and March-like (unsurprisingly - it was March!). But I loved the smallness of the museum - nicely put together, I thought.

That's exactly what we said going in: If this doesn't stink, we'll be happy. And then it was loads of fun!

I know! I want to see it again, except that this is a sci-fi summer in terms of movies and we're still waiting for the cheap $5 theater to reopen. :-S The price tag at the regular theater puts a bit of a damper on repeat viewing. But perhaps I will anyway - despite certain predictable flaws, I really liked the film!

With luck, Uhura will have loads to do in the next one (fingers crossed there will be a next one...).

She'd better! (And I'm sure there will be - Hollywood is about money and it knows a lucrative enterprise when it sees one.)

Sort of blooming: one thing I noticed was that while Paris has lots of green space (and trees), there weren't many flower. Maybe we were just wandering round the wrong bits.

But the weather was beautiful throughout and everywhere was glorious. Our last night we heard a crashing noise outside the hotel room that sounded like a sudden rainstorm. When we went out to check, it turned out to be a host of rollerbladers going past! Took about five minutes for them to get past - one lone skateboarder at the back.

I used to live just round the corner from the Musee Rodin! I have happy memories of sprawling on the benches there with the Resident Geek reading the English papers on the weekend just after Labour won the 1997 election (back when we really did think Things Could Only Get Better... sigh)

Hope you had lots of fun. Let them eat cake! (Where did you?)

What an amazing place to have lived, one of my favourite bits of Paris. (We had cake at the hotel, actually, although we'd had a nice lunch at the cafe on the corner opposite the museum.)

We saw Star Trek last night and both loved it - even Sahib, who was there on suffrance because he thinks SF is really a bit beneath him . It was a hoot and that shot of the Enterprise emerging slowly from the gas cloud against the beautiful backdrop of the rings of Saturn was stunning.

'Twasn't cake at the Café Angélina, was it?

Am now halfway through series 3 of Battlestar Galatica. I think you should reconsider your decision not to watch it. It's top notch telly (and not just thanks to Lee Adama's constant bicep exposing!)

SPOILERS FOR BSG SEASON 2

You mean you got to the bit where the Cylons return a year after they've settled on New Caprica, and Kara's married, and Lee's fat, and the Chief has grown a beard and is being a commie trade unionist, and you could bear not to watch season 3?!?!? {aghast}

I swear to you: I was sitting watching the last episode thinking, "Thank god, it'll be over soon..." and then I realized it was a DOUBLE EPISODE... I almost switched off there and then. I did plough through to the end and I did quite like the change of pace - AT LAST!

I seem to lack the gene to like this show.
