GJ doesn't seem to be very healthy itself these days - I keep a foothold there, but given they recommend InsaneJournal (http://www.greatestjournal.com/create.bml) themselves I tend to assume that will be the fallback (until it's overwhelmed too).
GJ seems to have serious problems, too. I haven't been able to update for quite some time. I'd be devastated if LJ collapsed, though. All those wonderful posts and comments gone... and I'm too technically challenged to save anything. :(
If you are too technically challenged, ask one of your technical friends to get lj archive, or lj backup and then sit with them and type in your password (or tell them the password) and let them download all your LJ posts and comments for you.
I'll always put my money on Journalfen. I think Bonnie and Robin are too smart to let it grow too fast, or put themselves in a position where they can't afford to maintain it.
(BTW, did you get my mail? Not in an OMG I WANT A REPLY way, just that I used the new address from your info page after the old one bounced.)
(I did get your email and I have been beside myself with glee. Bad cold and last minute edits on the DS9 book have stopped me communicating this but - GLEE! GLEE! GLEE!)
Journalfen can be a little flaky, and the site design isn't great (it still says 'Livejournal' in a lot of places, for example) but it's been around for a fair while, now.
You can buy an account, or get someone already on there to request a creation code for you. Basically, it's the old system which used to be in place on LJ, which is one reason I have faith in JF sticking around, because the owners keep control of the site growth.
I'm rivrea on IJ as well! I think I have still got an GJ account somewhere, but the site has been suffering from quite a few problems lately. Might be worth checking out JF too.
Since I have just found out that there are no free accounts at JF, I will probably wait until the proverbial shit actually hits the fan (or fandom, in this case?); but I will friend on IJ, just in case.
I have a GJ (if still active? must check!) but the best suggestion I've seen so far is this helpful note from the OTW people: You can create a User: page for yourself on Fanlore. (All those "If LJ goes away" posts on LJ are kind of useless if LJ actually goes away!) You can put all your pseuds, journals, websites, and other contact info on your User: page, and the wiki is searchable and obviously updatable, so folks will always know where to find you.
Someone who clearly has an axe to grind (I apologise for creating this link) would have us believe that GJ has gone for good. I certainly can't reach it today, perhaps because it has been swamped by a tidal wave of anxious LJ users.
