It's a sort of landscape view of the capital city in my AU Britain, as one of my characters will see it as he approaches (it's kind of roughly where modern-day Gloucester is now). It's not come out quite as I wanted, but it's a start.

And after thumping the 'auto correct' button:

Dwim, I tried to get a better shot of that lamp post, but it just wouldn't come out, sorry! Hang on... Try this!

The auto-correct makes it look like sunset. The lamp is lovely; where does that belong?

When does your AU split off?

Thank you! The lamps are in the street in front of the house I drew the other day: see here.

The AU splits off just after the end of the Roman occupation of Britain.

Ooh, interesting! You can have quite different architecture and society then.

Yes, that's the plan! I want to play at the style of a historical without all that tedious mucking about they call research! ;-)

And that's why I like SF. If I ever write the mystery novel in my head, it will have to be set in the future or an AU so I don't have to write present-day Britain. Because I would fail.

SF holds some anxieties for me because I worry about getting the science wrong (but then space opera covers a multitude of sins).

The idea for this book is that various periods and themes of British history should 'echo' through it in some way. Let's see if I can pull it off.

I get the impression that the POV is looking down on the city from a hill, but one that is not quite as high as the one behind the city?

I think it must be. I have to confess I didn't think of the POV: I used this photo as reference.

Ah, thanks! Much less blurry. :-)
