I decided to have a go at [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo. I have not seriously attempted to draw anything since I was about fourteen. So this will be, um, interesting. I do draw a very little bit, but mostly rough sketches to help me plan the action of a scene or story.

I thought what I'd try to do is draw some sketches related to an ongoing project, a novel set in an AU Britain called Cold Heaven. Yesterday I drew a sketch of the town house owned by one of my lead characters.

There are more sketches from yesterday in my NaArMaMo gallery.

Today's drawing is a more detailed stab at the glass above the front door. That's meant to be the sea and the sky, with the Pole star. I found some felt tip pens lying in a drawer and used them with any thought of consequences.

Yayy! And you drew a house, too - I was just thinking today how hard it would be to draw a house. An imaginary house!

I like it. I am drawn to going through the arches at the sides.

Thank you! This is a quite scary endeavour. If you go down the arches at the side, you will quickly find yourself at the kitchen, where someone would give you a nice cup of something or other and probably a bun. Result!

That is a posh house! Are you going to do an interiors for NaArMaMo too? But enjoy it whatever you do!

She is very rich. This is all very nerve-wracking, but perhaps doing some wallpapers and carpets might soothe me!

*hugs you and cheers you on*

Yes, carpets and wallpapers and chandeliers and surely in a house that size there is a grand piano?

Interesting question... I don't think they've invented the piano. What might they have instead? Will have to ponder.

Harps? Since I'm thinking of imposing instruments that might go with an imposing house.

Now that's an interesting one: I wonder what the history of harps is? I'll have a poke around online.

Fortepiano if a little too early for pianoforte. Spinet. Harpsichord.

I'm not quite sure they've even got that far yet. I'll have a think.

That's a very impressive house :)

Being highly inartistic, I haven't joined you all, but I'm happily going round patting backs...

But your icons are incredibly artistic!

Thanks :) but it must be said that someone else did the drawing or took the photo - neither of which I am any good at. I just - play with them.

There's playing with things, and there's playing with things. What you do with 100 x 100 pixels is incredibly skilled (if Jane Austen was content with miniatures, after all...!).

A very grand house!

I love your front-door glass. What a beautiful yet simple design!

The glass is considerably more impressive in my head, but I think it's not bad for ten minutes with a pencil and some ancient felt tip pens, and more than twenty years rustiness since trying to draw anything like it!

It reminds me of a house in a Leon Garfield novel. Elegant and just so slighty intimidating.

Ooh, good, it should feel a bit intimidating.

How fun!

So when you draw to set scenes for yourself, do you usually focus on the location, as you seem to be doing here? Or do you find yourself drawn to people in the scene? Or does it really depend on the scene?

I love the lamp post (but it's blurry - wai! Scanner didn't like it, or else my internet was misbehavin'...). Seeing that singled out for attention felt very much like walking out of the wardrobe with Lucy for the first time and finding the lamp post there.

I'm always drawn to location - I haven't tried drawing people since school. I like drawing buildings, and landscapes, but most of all I love drawing maps, particularly street maps of towns. (I found a whole pile of these - of completely imaginary towns! - in my boxes last week.)

(It's possible that I'm drawing from someone's perspective: I thought of that picture of the house as the first view one of the other characters has of it.)

The lamp post is blurry because I made a bish of taking a picture of it! :-D I'll try to get a better one later. It did come out rather Narnian, didn't it?!

Ooh! Pictures!

Hmm, I wonder if it is too late for me to join Naarmo? I kind of like the idea.
