Oh, Ronnie, you make life more beautiful. It's so much better to see you smiling than clawing at your own face. Although Peter Ebdon makes me do that too.

So, in honour of your record breaking ninth competitive maximum break, here's another of my occasional polls for collecting important data about my friends for when the revolution comes.

Pollsters! If you previously chose Bach and The Left Hand of Darkness, here's your chance!

[Poll #1179544]

The Steve Davis option appears to be missing.

Personally, I hate Ronnie O'Sullivan, who I reckon gives Ilford a bad name.

And the Joe Davis option is definitely missing.

Presumably you deliberately restricted this to current plauyers. Hendry is now past his best, so it has to be O'Sullivan. Musicians are divided into thew Romantic and the Classical schools, and I've seen it suggested that this can be applied to batsmen in cricket. If you apply it to snooker players, then I suppose that O'Sullivan in the supreme romantic and Hendy the supreme classicist.

If you repeat this poll in five years time, what's the betting that the options are mainly players from China? :)

Heh, yes, I like that!

For me, Ronnie is all about the passion, Hendry is all about the technique.

I am going to be first against the wall when the revolution comes, because I haven't the faintest idea who these people are.

I don't know, but the title of this post was in one of the essays I graded yesterday, which I still find irrelevantly silly. (It's what religion can bring your civilization up to, you see.)

I picked it because it's what Servalan in Blake's 7 says, just before her moment of triumph turns into defeat. (Clip downloadable from here, if you're not a B7 fan and don't mind being spoiled!)

I remember I gave serious consideration to marrying Davis in the 1980s when I discovered this. There was an interview in which he complained that he kept missing their gigs because of bloody snooker.

Ronnie and Hendry (it still shocks me to the core that Hendry is no longer an acne'd teenager) might attain demi-godhood; but only Steve Davies can be the real thing. His dry, deadpan sense of humour is - hm - 'magical' won't do. I know! 'Miraculous!!!!!'

Speaking of Beethoven and Bach, I rather like this quote from Douglas Adams:

"Mozart tells us what it's like to be human, Beethoven tells us what it's like to be Beethoven and Bach tells us what it's like to be the universe."

Date: 2008-04-30 06:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
Now I would say Mozart tells us what it's like to be Mozart. Bach describes the universe, and Beethoven channels it. Bach hovers you over the universe, Beethoven plunges you into it.

We must talk about this in detail face to face one day: I want to hear you talk about what you mean when you use the word 'experience'. And perhaps you can play me some Bach and tell me what's happening when you listen, and I'll play you some Beethoven and tell you what's happening, most likely by means of hand gestures and/or incoherent rambling.

I am hoping that I have picked up on your subtle cues correctly, but really all I know about snooker players, I learnt from a revue at university which featured such classic numbers as 'Jimmy White, Superstar, you're not as good as they say you are' and 'Let's do the trickshot again'.

I am rubbish at your polls, and I still know nothing about Beethoven or Bach, but I am hoping you will forgive me anyway.

Actually, that's a pretty good introduction to snooker!

You have picked up the subtle cues most correctly. This is the kind of thinking that my revolution needs!
