[livejournal.com profile] luzula has done a wonderful reading of my Earthsea fanfic, The Inner Dark. It's a story about Thar, one of the priestesses from The Tombs of Atuan, and you can download it from here. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] luzula!

EEEE! I didn't know you'd done a Tombs of Atuan fic! I shall look forward to listening to that.

I haven't listened to the recording yet, but I just read your fic and it's wonderful! Tombs of Atuan was always my favourite Earthsea book, I wanted to read more about the lives of the girls and women at the Place and I was a little disappointed when Ged showed up and changed everything. I loved reading about Thar's life in your story -- it fit really well with my memories of her character and the way she related to Arha/Tenar.

Oh, thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I wrote it not long after completing my PhD thesis, when I was intellectually very parched. The Tombs of Atuan was my favourite as a child, and I remember being terribly saddened at Thar's death. I think she reminds me of a lot of the extremely clever women teachers that I had at my Catholic primary school, who had been of that generation that had to choose between family life and intellectual life.

(Tehanu is my favourite now: I think it has several faults, but I admire the sheer gutsiness of returning to a successful and much-loved world and starting to reexamine all its premises. And I love the quiet determination of the prose and the deep companionship that grows almost silently between Ged and Tenar.)

I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the story :-) [livejournal.com profile] luzula has done a great job on the reading too.
