[livejournal.com profile] majoritython: "To celebrate the possibility that (at long, long last) either a woman or a person of color will be the next American president by producing fanworks about people of color and women in positions of political power." This could include:

  • Slash, het or gen fic about a woman and/or person of color in any fandom who holds elected or appointed civil office, or who governs or rules a country, planet or federation.

  • RPF about a historical or contemporary person of color and/or woman who holds elected or appointed civil office, or who governs or rules a country or sovereign territory.

  • Icons, graphics and vids about any of the above.

Brainstorming and signups are going on now; here's the FAQ. And please spread the word around your fandoms!

This is an awesome idea. I've picked Servalan, but I'd love someone to write about Constance Markievicz. Loads of suggestions already in the brainstorming, including characters from: Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate: Atlantis, The West Wing, Bujold, DS9, The Chronicles of Narnia, etc. etc. And characters from real life too!

It is an awesome idea, though personally I think McCain will win against Obama for certain and Clinton in all probability.

I'm quite tempted to have a go at someone historical.

Do! Signups go on until April 12 and fics are not due till June 3.

And do take a look at the prompts page, because I'm sure you could provide some great material for that.

Servalan's who I thought of straight away. I look forward to seeing what you do for her.

The other B7 character I thought would fit was Hal Mellanby, if we assume that he (like Blake), led a political party that elected its leaders, but had been made illegal.

Interesting idea! And I note that so far it's all women. I'm not sure how good I'd be at political fic though. Not very, I suspect.

You never know until you try. Go in the personal way, perhaps, about how his political choices affected his family?

Hmm. I shall have to think about it.

Ignore the wording on the icon; it's just my other Dayna one.

I suspected it might be that series. I've never seen it.

I really like it - clever scripts, good characterization. It's occasionally a bit smug. It's pretty consistent too: there's a dip around season 5, but then it picks up again.

PS How about Kerril on Vilaworld?

An idea, but I'm not sure how much influence she'd have over aliens with such a strong telepathic bond between themselves and so little propensity for actually talking. I'd have to think up a reason that would put her ahead, like the inability to be swayed by thought.

Oh, this sounds wonderful. I'm awfully tempted, despite the fact that I've already signed up for two other ficathons. Well, in any case, I can always read other people's fic.

Oh, come and join! It's going to be brilliant. As for the other ficathons - as the heroine in your icon would say: You Can Do It!

#1— what an excellent idea to be spread around fandom. That's so very, very cool!

#2— I'd never heard of Constance Markievicz. I'm so glad you posted the wikipedia link; I'm now totally fascinated. OMG. If I didn't already have two fic things with deadlines coming up, I would do that. OTOH, I may start doing a whole bunch of research a la Mary Renault and think about writing about her in a historical fiction way. Though that's probably pretty presumptuous and whatever else. She sounds incredibly compelling. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! You may have influenced the activities of my life for the next year or so! I was planning to visit Ireland next fall when I come over to the U.K., but now I can have a focus.

And a general "Hi, Altariel! I hope you're doing well!" to you as a person. :D

#1 - It's a brilliant idea - hurray for [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie and [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge! Do post about it around your various fandoms, surely there are some HP characters who would fit?

#2 - Wow, I'm so glad to have posted that link! It would be fantastic if your wrote historical fiction about her; she is an amazing, romantic figure. I've read one biography about her (which I think is the third one listed at the bottom of the page, only I can't find it on my bookshelf - where do these things go?!).

It so good to hear from you: All is well here, I'm pottering along as usual. Are you likely to be in this part of the country when you're in the UK?

I've posted on my LJ; at least within HP, Kingsley Shacklebolt becomes Minister for Magic at the end of the last book, a person of color, so that could definitely be a jumping-off point. Sadly in my shiny new fandom of Wraeththu, they're all hermaphrodites. :) And nearly all lily white, as well. Oh well. I now have Constance Markievicz to think about and begin collecting vast amounts of research about!!

I'll be going to all parts of the UK in which I have friends to visit. :) It's still all rather unformed in my head, and the pull to Scotland of course is quite strong, but I think I *must* go to Ireland this go 'round. But I'll put together an itinerary based on where my friends are.

Ahahaha, my never-to-be-finished HP novel has a woman campaigning to be Minister for Magic... This is a completely brilliant idea. (And of course DWJ is on record as saying that there has never been a woman Chrestomanci because Chrestomanci's world is too conservative...)
