Sad news about Anthony Minghella. Truly, Madly, Deeply was a defining undergraduate film for me, but what I remember most fondly is the series he did with Jim Henson, The Storyteller.

I get a nasty jolt whenever someone younger than me dies.

Yes, fifty-odd seems nothing to me, that's my brother's age.

Me too. Or the same age, even. Also Minghella achieved so much in that 54 years.

I was really shocked when I heard. I liked his films very much but I loved "The Storyteller". A nearly forgotten TV gem.

I think I still have it on video tape somewhere. It seems to have had a Region 1 DVD release, but I can't find it on Region 2.

I was really shocked too.

It's on Play.com as Jim Henson's Storyteller here, but for an eye-wateringly painful price, and that's just Part 1. I think I'll have to stick with my elderly videos for the moment :(

Ouch, that is expensive :-(

Golly, I don't remember The Storyteller - maybe it coincided with my student years when I didn't have access to a TV. Those were the days, eh, when we all sat round in the SU and played rummy of a Saturday night. No, sadly I'm older than that ... I was just living abroad. Such a shame about Anthony Minghella, who seemed like a nice bloke apart from anything else. I'm eagerly awaiting The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency on Sunday - his swansong, as it turned out.

If you can find The Storyteller somewhere (although the DVDs sound awfully expensive), it's well worth a watch. I must remember to record No 1 Ladies Detective Agency: I read a couple of the books and lost interest, but I think it will make good TV.

Sad news indeed. I have admired several of his films, and I love and own and regularly re-watch Truly, Madly, Deeply.

He was only a couple of years older than me. Gone far too soon.

It really is no age. I haven't seen TMD in years, but used to watch it very regularly not long after my father died.

Yes, very sad news. I've enjoyed every film of his I've seen. He was one of the few directors who never assumed the audience was dumb.

I also have fond memories of Truly, Madly, Deeply.

I knew his daughter vaguely by sight - she was at my college, in a different year - enough to have been thinking about her yesterday.
