On podfic

Specifically, the podfic I was after in a previous post is fanfiction read out (rather than audio books per se, although I'm going to get round to that too), whether by the author or else by My Friends. Which I think is a smashing idea. The ever-wise [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy sent me to this site, but I see none of my fandoms *mourns* Shall I do some? What shall I do?

How much voice have you got? Would you consider doing A Game of Chess, assuming you want to read out your own work?

Blimey! I'll probably try some of the vignettes first, in case I turn out to be rubbish at it.

(Ideally, AGOC wants three readers, for the three different voices.)

How about the shorter pieces like "What the Thunder Said" then? I like the idea of pod-fic, and it would be neat if someone on my f-list took it up as well.

I think I'll definitely try some vignettes first. I hope some other people take up the idea in my fandoms.

:-) I cannot imagine you being rubbish at it.

What about Through A Glass? Journey's End? Ainulindalë?

I'm a bit of a gabbler.

Those are good suggestions, particularly Journey's End, which I think would suit being read.

Oh, yes! Do some!

I've actually considered this myself. I no longer have a very pleasing voice, and I think I'd be scared to read aloud some of what I've written. (Because...naughty! It was hard enough typing some of that, let alone reading it out!) But I think the "market" for audiofic will only grow and grow. I would LOVE to a) listen to fic read aloud by friends and b) read about your adventures in recording same.

And can I just add that your icon is cracking me up?

Right, I'll give it a pop. I'll try reading some of my own short pieces, and then I think I'll pick some of my other favourite authors and stories.

I tend to gabble when lecturing, so slowing down will be the main thing. I've only read out my fiction to a small group of sympathetic listeners before, and it's made me terribly nervous. I want to get past that. (Oddly, I think it might be different when the audience isn't directly in front of me.)

Glad you like the icon - here's another one ;-) I mainlined Upstairs, Downstairs at the end of last year, and then demanded icons from Mr A.

I loved that series! It will be fun to see it again.

I had managed to go my entire life without having any of the narrative spoiled for me (it was on when I was far too little to be watching). Absolutely stellar.

My mini-version of Operation Clear Out progressed further today: I now have a comfortable spare bedroom again.

Excellent! The way I see it, you just saved tens of thousands of pounds by creating a new bedroom out of thin air!

Thinking about it, I think I'd really love to hear Flowers of the Forest read aloud, but I know that might be hard for you to do. Perhaps sometime when the time is right and you're in the right mood. Or perhaps Mr A could do the honours. It's just that I think the language is beautiful and it really flows.

Right, I'll put that on the list, although I might get a bit emotional. I'll get there somehow!

The more the merrier! (And it's my friends' voices I really want.) This is the Tolkien fanfic referred to; fwiw, I wrote it after seeing the pictures from Abu Ghraib.

Whoo, that's powerful stuff, isn't it. The kind of thing you need to learn by rote to stop it getting to you...

It expressed itself physically, at first, as pain. I woke early one morning with a blinding headache that remained until I completed it. That doesn't usually happen so transparently.

There must be a LoTR podfic community, surely - have you tried searching on LJ interests?

The comms seem to be varieties of Stargate and some CSI. Tolkien fandom is an awful lot quieter than it used to be, it might be that the idea hasn't filtered through from those "frontline" fandoms yet. I'll google it too though just in case.

Off-the-cuff voice coaching going free here if you decide to do it :) Reading aloud's not always as easy as it looks and I'd be happy to help you hit a good standard. Cos, y'know, fanfic++, and altariel++, and stuff :)

Aw, you're making me bashful! I may well take up your advice, thank you: I "hiss" my esses quite a lot, and I don't think that will carry well. I'm going to try damping them the way I do when singing, and see how that comes out.

I'd never heard of podcasting fanfiction. What a brilliant idea!

Why not do your favorite short piece in each of your fandoms, and see how it goes? It would be wonderful to see al your work in podcast form, but of course that's a very long-term project.

Isn't it a smashing idea? I have a short list of Tolkien ones I'm going to do, and then I think you're right and it would be fun to do a couple from some of the other fandoms.

(And I'd like to try Firimar, if you were willing... But you might want to wait to hear what kind of reader I make, first!)

The more, the merrier! There can't be any such thing as too many quality fanfiction podcasts! :D

And I'm flattered that you'd like to make a podcast of Firimar. If you feel up to it, you're more than welcome to read it. You'd certainly make a better reader than I would! I don't know no nuthin' 'bout makin' no podcasts. ;-)

Splendid! I shall put Firimar on the list. I don't no nuthin' bout making no podcasts neither, so I'll try to get the hang of it before letting myself loose on your prose!

Just nipping in to say that Firamir is one of my all-time favorites and I'd love to hear it read aloud.
