Many thanks for the Doctor Who fic recs in the comments of my last post.

Question: I can't find my Firefly DVDs, nor my copy of the f/f Blake's 7 zine Sleer as Folk. If you're reading this and you've borrowed one or both of them, could you let me know? I'm in no particular hurry to get them back, I just couldn't lay my hands on them when I went looking the other week, and I'd be sad to think they'd gone missing. Ta muchly!

GoWANgowangowangowangowan... first ep of season 4:

Rodney: You've done your best work under me.
Zelenka: Under you!? I have my own department!
Rodney: Oh, please, we both know that department is a joke-
John: Why don't you two just make out and get it over with?

Colonel to John: I think you should be in command of this facility.
John: But then I'd be The Man, and who would I have to rage against?

It Has Been Forbidden. Honestly, it would make Mr A. so sad, I just couldn't do it to him. Not after making him sit through most of Deep Space Nine. Particularly the episode with the Ferengi and Iggy Pop.

I just met a Trekkie today, one of the guys at the department, and reeled out the fact that I Knew Someone Who Wrote Relevant Books, which gets me instant cred (with the right people). He was a TNG guy, though. I'm kind of curious about DS9, you know, I think I want to watch more of it. That holodeck one whetted my appetite. Although I'm sort of afraid to ask about the episode with the Ferengi and Iggy Pop.

TNG was my first Trek love, I watched tons of it while I was doing my A-levels.

Reasons to watch DS9. Let us draw a veil over the Ferengi-Pop episode. Also the ones about baseball. DS9 is the business, and the one that all the cool kids like best. The starting point of the story is that a bunch of terrorists have finally driven their Cardassian oppressors off their homeworld, Bajor. There's lots of stuff about being in the Resistance, right up my street. Political shenanigans on Bajor as various religious and political groups vie for control.

In season 4, the show starts to develop a running narrative, so for best effect you need to watch a continuous run from then on. DS9 is the front line of a MASSIVE WAR. So it really gathers pace, and the ongoing narrative means that the writers are able to give space to all these secondary characters, some of whom end up having some of the best stories in the show. Like Garak, of course, but others too.

Also, Kira (see icon, with Garak) is the best female character in the whole of Trek.

I have a very large carrier bag of stuff waiting to make the return journey to Altariel Towers but those are not among them.

Eeep, I'm sorry! Sleer as Folk is my fault. I'm sorry I've hung onto it!

Absolutely no worries! Phew! Just relieved to know where it is and that it didn't get turned into mulch during one of our floods!

Every time I miss something I know I loaned out, but cannot remember to whom, I tell myself I am going to get a card file for loaned items.

Of course the moment of potential organization quickly passes before I act on it.

replying to mikekellner: I have a whiteboard, and at least 10% of the things I've lent out are listed there.

I am sure that is about how well the card file idea would work. I'd forget to put a card in at the moment of lending, and it would be useless.

Now that I'm getting deeper into Homicide: Life on the Street I was even tempted to put up the loans in red and then re-write them in black marker when they're returned, but that would be going too far.

I sometimes remember to scribble down on little bits of paper... which I promptly lose.

Having once searched everywhere for a book of mine and not found it, I more or less accused a friend of having borrowed it and not returned it, only to find it on my own bookshelves a few weeks later. Very embarassing!

Ooh. Do we have your Firefly DVDs? This is QUITE POSSIBLE. We certainly had someone's Firefly DVDs at some point, because we watched them... I will have a look in the Tower O'Sci-Fi over the weekend.

Ooh, I'd appreciate it if you had a look, thank you. There's no way of distinguishing whether they're mine or someone else's, however.

(Sorry about my very weird time-frame for responding to things atm, term is starting and we had a visitor last weekend, everything is very... out-of-synch.)

I'll tell you what I think has happened. I'm pretty sure we did have your Firefly DVDs, but on reflection I remember we watched them in a hurry in order to give them back to you at [livejournal.com profile] ms_manna's at the Doctor Who marathon weekend... whenever it was. I haven't had a really good poke through the Tower O'Sci-Fi and I will do so, but I remember talking to you about Firefly at [livejournal.com profile] ms_manna's and I think that was triggered by handing over the DVDs to you - I suspect they got left behind at her house (or someone else has had it away with them since then.)

Am missing you, btw, and wish to catch up with your news in a more focussed way than via LJ - I might write you an email or do some other old-fangled kind of communication thing.

Good thinking, Batman, and I've asked [livejournal.com profile] ms_manna to look around.

I am missing you very much too. Understand about term-stress.
