I have just got back from a weekend in Chicago with my fantastic friends and fellow fanficcers Isabeau and Dwimordene. Eee, why does there have to be the Atlantic ocean and a continent between us?!

There may be stories. Oh yes, there may be stories...

Glad to hear you had a lovely time. Oceans are can be most inconvenient!

It was the most fantastic weekend. We stayed here, which had been an affordable home for "working women" since the 1920s (and was now a hotel). And the weather was fabulous, sunny but not to hot, and the company was the best.

Traffic was a sod, though.

That inn looks lovely! Were there any special gems in the library?

Boo to traffic, but I'm glad everything else was brilliant. And I shall look forward to the fic!

The library was mostly mainstream travel and novels, so nothing too gem-like that I spotted. Mostly it was fun to sit in, tho' really we needed glasses of brandy to complete the scenario!

Fic already up. And more to come, most likely!

And quilted dressing-gowns?

Yay for the fic and more fic to come! *dances your fic*

Possibly a bit warm for quilted dressing-gowns, but perfect for the winter months.

I really wish you could have been there too. Ah well, more reason for a Cambridge Summit one day.

Ah here's hoping for a Cambridge Summit *sigh*. Hmm I'm going to expect a full report. Glad you had a great time.

Ooh, Chicago! Awesome! (and fangirls, of course, who are always awesome). Glad you had fun!

It was a whole weekend of awesomeness, with some extra fabulosity sprinkled on top. We stayed at the Margarita European Inn, which was opened as an affordable home for "working women" in 1927. It had a little library and parlours! As Isabeau pointed out, though, the most European thing was that when you turned on the hot water in the shower, it turned into a trickle. Home from home!

You were in Chicago?! Damn! So very close, but not quite close enough.

I'm glad you were able to get together with Isabeau and Dwim, and had a great time. Chicago's a fun city, especially at this time of year.

I flew into Louisville from Raleigh, then drove up from there. Damn, this country is big! (Although the Chicago traffic was the most time-consuming part of the journey.)

It was just beautiful up there: warm but not punishing, and the city was glowing. I gather this period around now is the perfect time: cooled down from summer, winter freeze hasn't yet come.

*weeps tears of frustration* My mother was born in Loiusville, and my family used to make that drive every summer when I was a girl, going down to visit her parents on the family farm. I still have an uncle living there. it's a pretty drive, if you like corn.

September and early October are absolutely the best time to visit Chicago, for just the reasons you stated. Did you get a chance to do any sightseeing while you were there?

There was a lot of corn. More corn than I had previously imagined possible!

We did next to no sightseeing, really: walked along the Lake from Evanston up to Northwestern, and sat there for a while, and did some wandering around Evanston itself (which was lovely). And then Isabeau and I had to drive through downtown to get back onto the interstate: that was simply stunning. I have to go back there.

And you haven't even seen Iowa yet! :D

Chicago's a great town with a stunning lakefront and plenty of things to see and do. It would make a great short getaway for you. Just stay away from it during December through February unless you don't mind cold!

It was just wonderful. Solid talking (and plotting!). I think there will be stories aplenty as a result, hurrah!

Eee, why does there have to be the Atlantic ocean and a continent between us?!

Because otherwise, at least some of us would starve to death happily avoiding all forms of paid labor! See, it really is the best of all possible worlds. ;-)

I'm so glad you both were able to come out to Chicago - it was a great time! We've definitely got to do Cambridge Summit or Louisville/Lexington Summit.

LOL! Fair point! Tho' I do think someone should gift one of those huge houses in Evanston to us a fanfic retreat.

I'm really grateful that you were able to rearrange your weekend, and thank you for all your hospitality :-)
