Wasn't all the Gallifrey stuff really Harry Potter-ish? All those Time Lords looking terribly wizardly, and the sorting hat staring into the vortex or whatever it was, and then the Master's magic wand laser screwdriver. I merely remark.

Oh, and my Rusty-love leapt to new levels when Martha went all Roj Blake at the end: "I'm coming back."

Wow. I got no kind of Potter vibe off those bits. Not even a little bit. I mean, yeah, I suppose there were some vague similarities, but I think you're reaching.

I dunno, the baby!Master actually did remind me a heck of a lot of Harry Potter... I think that's why I couldn't buy into him. The rest, maybe a slight stretch at points, given that all that's pretty generic stuff, but, man, they cast a very Potterish little kid.

(Oh god, I'm being haunted by the ghosts of McCoy episodes today. "Mummy... mummy... can I have a packet of crisps?")

Bad, bad, naughty redstarrobot, for reminding people of the Gods of Ragnorok. Couldn't you have dredged up the ghost of the Chief Clown instead, perhaps? :-)

I dunno, I think hiding three evil gods of destruction as an average 1950s family is a stroke of genius. Not to mention wicked commentary. :)

Oh true, but it brings back the memory of the kid on the bike, which is equally wicked commentary but still makes me go Argh!

Yes, that kid was particularly Potterish.

Oh, I thought he pinched the vortex out of the book version of HHGTTG! It's difficult to keep up with constant larceny referencing, but that one did stand out as an obvious borrowing.

[livejournal.com profile] katlinel made the HHGTTG comment, too. Personally, I was too busy wondering whether this was squee for the continuity fans or completely new stuff.

I thought the Young Master (gosh, I sound like a Victorian retainer!) looked more like the 1970s Damien out of The Omen, pudding-basin haircut and all.

Crikey yes!

And Troughton was in that. All life is linked, as the Clonemasters said in Blake's 7, just before Servalan kills them all.

All those Time Lords looking terribly wizardly

Indeed! And I wonder whether there was a rota for standing-on-top-of-a-rock-outside-the-citadel-so-that-it-looks-impressive-against-the-skyline?

But the timelord "look" was classic - in that it was exactly how they were depicted in the Tom Baker era, years before HP.

And yes, there was plenty in the way of "squee", like Sam Tyler The Master commenting on the Tellytubbies (clear homage to the Jon Pertwee era Master commenting on the Clangers) and offering jellybabies.

Oh yes, the design was the same, but it was still Harry Potterish as well.

I'm a traditionalist. I never liked the Gallifreyan episodes after The Three Doctors, so I regard the big collars as nasty modernism.

My Time Lords compensate for their extra dimensions by living entirely in monochrome. This may have something to do with the fact that I was watching in black and white, but it appeals to me aesthetically.

From: [identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com
I don't think the two are contradictory... outside their ceremonial wotsit, they all pretty much wore monochrome robes like that old design.

Mr A. reckons nobody wanted that gig because they had to put all the clothes on. But I'd stand around on a rock, if it meant getting out of doing the dishes.

Ha, I've been looking for a crossword man. I keep trying to get an anagram out of Toclafone, and so far the most sensible one I can find is Footlance. Which I suppose could be a description of their weaponry, but is there something else I've missed?
