Look at my fabby icon which the splendiferous [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy made from me, from a picture [livejournal.com profile] theoryofgravity posted at [livejournal.com profile] loltheorists!

(Context: I was reading Emma Goldman's autobiography Living My Life last week - and, not incidentally, CRUSHING VASTLY - saw the original picture online on Saturday morning, then saw the tinkered version that afternoon and have been laughing steadily ever since. Perhaps you had to be there, but trust me on this - there has been much joy.)

Glad you like it! She's totally awesome, isn't she? I don't actually know anything about her apart from what I got on a brief scan of google hits after you mentioned her, but she looks hard as nails. He looks vaguely smug, like, "Yeah I hang out with anarchist feminists, don't you wish you were me? lol"

He also got locked up for fourteen years for trying to assassinate the manager of a big steel company, which may or may not be contributing for smugness! She was like this force of nature. The bits in the autobiography where she's talking to Lenin are frankly terrifying: "DON'T SAY IT EMMA! HE DOES NOT MEAN YOU WELL!"

[livejournal.com profile] loltheorists is magical, and yay for your icon! Not that I know much about Emma Goldman, or most of the other theorists featured, but she looks like knows exactly what she's doing and why she needs to be doing it.

Joy is good. May there be more of it.

It's an amazing book, I couldn't put it down. I have this feeling that if I'd read her autobiography when I was a teenager I would have done everything completely differently.

Swipe mine when I'm back.

It's a slightly relieved "Might have done everything completely differently"! (with a few regrets, but then I done it my way :-) )

Aww, thank you. *looks guiltily at pile of your books that are still unread*

Glad it was relief, and not mourning.

This is not so much to do with the icon itself, though I was going through [livejournal.com profile] loltheorists and saw your name there and it reminded me of my days at HASA and its associated mailing lists, where I used to go by the somewhat cumbersome name of narie_the_waitress, or simply narie for short. So I clicked through to your profile and lo and behold, you are the same Altariel I once or twice discussed the fall of Tharbad with, and we now happen to live in the same town, as I quite remember the hullabaloo spawned by the visit of the Iraqi president to the Union myself...

So, um, hi. *waves* I'll go back to my corner of the internet now :)

Hi there! *waves back* I remember you well :-) It's a small internet! What brings you to town? (I'm in the US till September, actually, with a few days here and there back in the UK.)

It is an eerily small internet sometimes, isn't it? As for what brings me to town, the pursuit of knowledge does - I'm doing my PhD here, and I've got another two years to look forward to amongst all the tourists and undergradutes in their robes. I'm quite enjoying it so far, don't let me fool you. :)

Ooh, what are you studying? Perhaps when I'm back from my North American adventure, we could meet and have coffee and cake?

I'm working in genetics - human genetics and 'recent' human evolution (60,000-50,000 years ago...). It's quite good times. And I would most definitely be up for coffee and cake, yes indeed. You'll have to let me know when you return. :)

Ooh, how interesting - a "proper" subject! (I'm a sociologist.)

I'll be back in early September (when the city is extremely beautiful, if you haven't seen around that time of year yet). So watch this space! (May I friend you?)

Yeah, sort of - there is still a pretty good amount of hand-waving and 'uh, yeah, we're fairly sure our dates for this are correct... plus or minus 10,000 years.' I do enjoy a good structuralist text every now and then, though - Foucault makes me happy.

I've only been around since early October, so I shall now definitely be looking forward to the end of summer. And do friend away, by all means - I have done the same, I hope you don't mind.

What's good about September is that the weather is usually beautiful - not too hot, not yet turned to cold, and with the first glimpse of autumn colours. And the town is relatively quiet: the tourist crush has gone, and the undergrad rush hasn't yet started. It's just a good time to enjoy the beauty of the place, and it has the first excitement that comes with the start of a new academic year.
