Yeah, I felt kind of sorry for him, too. I remember him getting relatively far in the World Championships one year before eventually losing, and him saying resignedly, "I guess I'll never win the bloody thing now."
In latter years, the parting in his hair was so far over that he nearly had both ears on the same side of his head.
