Three cheers for our brand new fan, which decided yesterday that it was far too hot to be expected to work, and broke down. I'll grind its bones to make my bread.
You might have to go a long way north to be safe... or south. I believe it's quite cool in New Zealand at this time of year.
As we're told this is going to become the norm, I'm beginning to wonder whether I can justify investing in one of these (http://www.guardianoffers.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/Guardian/TRUAC022)?
Bummer. It is disgustingly stuffy, isn't it? I've taken to sneaking downstairs every half an hour or so, just to open the door of the freezer and try to absorb the coolness for a few seconds. Hmmm. Let's hope I don't break the freezer. :-/
If you had a PHD in engineering, you might have put it together properly.
Just Kidding.
I don't understand what has happened to simple technology. Items like cell phones and self focussing digital cameras are well made and have long lifetimes considering the amount of fancy works in side, yet a simple fan, which is a motor (100+ year old technology) turning a plastic part has to be assembled by the purchaser and only lasts a few weeks.
My toaster does not do the two sides evenly. I have to turn the toast half way through. The quick connect fittings on my garden hose fail regularly. I have had three expensive can openers that either never opened cans properly or wore out in a year or two. Why can they not make these simple items function as well as the ones made 75 years ago?
Anyway, I hope you are coping with the heat. Are there air conditioned pubs or movie theaters you can retreat to in the evening.
Cheek! (I have a PhD in sociology, so I delegated the assembly task to anoterh party.)
I am pretty pissed off about this fan, I can tell you. We have had it almost exactly a fortnight. The last one we had kept going for years, with much more continuous use than this one has had. I'm guessing they want this stuff to break down more quickly so that we have to buy again sooner.
Can you complain to someone? Won't running the bread maker just add to the heat? My workplace is relatively bearable - big old building with stone floors - but my house is unbelievably oven-like. I almost bought a fan in the supermarket but now I'm wondering how long it would have lasted.
Is there no warranty on this fan? Two weeks is well within the cheapo one month warranty period.
It's raining here, but before you grow unbearably jealous and make yourself even hotter, it's still warm enough to require a fan. Preferably one with the back to the window to suck the somewhat cooler air in.
Nevertheless, I maintain this is FAR BETTER than winter. And at least I don't have to water the flowers today, which are looking somewhat droopy for all the wetness dropped upon them. Hm...
Yes, there's a 3 year guarantee, but we bought it online, and the whole process of finding a person to speak to, boxing it up, sending it back and getting a new one sent out is beyond my melting brain at the moment.
I think this is the hottest July on record for the UK. I know our winters are much milder, but I can't wait for September.

You need frozen grapes for this - mini-shots of ice to the brain.

Whereas summer has been on again off again here (not complaining (much)). Local forecast puts us at 72F right now, predicted high of 84F, with "strong thunderstorms" and the possibility of hail (?!?!).
They're threatening 88F here later, but I don't think it will creep that high. Damn, I wish those thunderstorms would turn up here. Slight breath of wind right now.
88F, you say? Hm. That's right in my comfort zone, so long as the humidity remains down and there's a fan available for the always-much-hotter indoors. Rain is also acceptable if it must be humid, but I reserve the right to pout about how much nicer it would be if it were sunny and dry.
You can have today's thunderstorms, though, with my thanks. I need to pick up my bike from the shop hopefully today. Since I just sent it in to get a tune-up and have the very rusty chain and sprockets fixed/replaced, I'd like not to have to bother with oiling them up immediately.

Date: 2006-07-20 07:28 am (UTC)Hmm, good point. I need minions.
The last fan we had was brilliant - we had it for five or six years and used it constantly during the summer. This one we've had a fortnight. Gah!
A fan, a plan, obsolescence?
