[livejournal.com profile] ms_manna visited Altariel Mansions at the weekend. She brought the sparkle, I brought the Inquisition. We watched a romcom which may have had a member or two or N*Sync in it, switched off Valentine, discovered the bizarre IMDB biography of Stacy Keach, and hoped that someone in this world would provide us with a Blake's 7 songvid to the Friends theme tune. Food of exquisite quality was served at regular intervals and devoured at great speed.

[livejournal.com profile] ms_manna also brought Paul Darrow's autobiography and, to my complete astonishment, I am really enjoying it. He seems to have entered the same stage of his career as Boston Legal-era Shatner, and is enjoying the whole thing immensely and with a real sense of proportion. There is a mouth-watering photograph of him as a twenty-four year old playing Edmund in King Lear. And (everything connects) he has just mentioned Justin Timberlake (describing Tarrant and Dayna as Justin Timberlake meets Janet Jackson).

Oh, but he does seem to think 'Power' has a happy ending.

And an extremely fine time she had, too, thank you both :-)

That's scarily appropriate! All those curls...

It was brilliant to have you here! :-)

I bet Tarrant would shoot someone who tried to repossess his house.

The morally dodgy ended happily-ish for the moment and the morally even dodgier got zapped. That's fiction, as big butch Oscar nearly said...

Get thee behind me, [livejournal.com profile] altariel1. I am writing a paper.

(Yes, still. It's papers all the way down till 30 July.)

PS: I like the new design! Sorry if this is v out-of-date: have been away at conferences and not seen much of my flist, or indeed Doomsday, yet - it's pencilled in for tonight.

You know, your name may have crossed our minds... Wouldn't it be great: "Your job's a joke, you're broke, you're love life's D.O.A..." or: "It hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year..."

Ahem. Anyway. Good luck with the papers.

Glad you like the design! It's just an ordinary default one - I want to tinker with the text, I don't like the tiny squint-o-vision Arial font. Really looking forward to hearing what you thought about 'Doomsday'.

The terrifying thing is that this is stirring something in my memory - way back in the mists of time when I was still living with the Thornlady, we did a B7 filk of the Friends theme tune. (It didn't take much changing, IIRC - I don't remember much of it, apart from something like So no-one told you Blake was going to be this way/ [something something], your Fearless Leader's gay...)

Heh! It's crying out for a video. (Think of this as grateful payment for the hours I've spent reading the Barbelith BB thread this week. Which - much better than watching it.)

I remembered it properly, while I was walking to the library! It went So no-one told me Blake was going to be this way/ Of all I knew myself to be, I left out 'gay'...

And the other thing about the Friends theme, of course, is that it's quite short.

(Barbelith BB thread: oops. Okay, I owe you. ::goes off to download the Friends theme from somewhere::)

Forty-six seconds, we determined at the weekend. I have two separate Friends songvids, if that would help - one of Firefly, one of, ahem, N*Sync...

Actually, it really would:* I can only find the 3-minute full song version so far, which is no use.

*For very specific values of the word 'help', naturally. For instance, it won't so much help with writing about telephones in the Aeneid.

PS: OMG look at your icon!!

There you are, easy! Now go get vidding.

:-) That's not going to make my name, now is it?

Luckily I still have some S3 and 4 episodes to rip before I can make the vid, which means I can simultaneously vid & write... Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] msmanna!

Oh, and I just saw that *NSYNC Friends vid. I'm starting to see your point. Eek! (Though Justin Timberlake is funny-looking, and one of the others - JC, I think? - looks exactly like... someone. I thought it was Jack out of Will and Grace but now I'm wondering if it's Brendon Fraser (clearly it's someone who guest-starred on Scrubs, this seems to be how my brane stores faces). May have to watch it a few more times to check...

Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] msmanna!!!!

Yes, Justin is funny-looking. :-) Although I would say that it's part of their charm that they aren't all clonally identical pretty boys. (And they can actually sing very well indeed, which is a big plus :-)

Actually, if you'd like a closer study of the sparkly joy which is Nsync, there are a couple more vids by Dacey which are equally as excellent as the 'Friends' one. In fact, even if you don't like Nsync but like vidding, they're worth seeing just for the quality of the editing.

I'll have a look for your e-mail address, and e-mail a link to them.

Paul Darrow's autobiography, how did I miss that coming out?

Oh well, I was just about to make my pre-Summer holidays Amazon order.

Edmund, tho'. Edmund will always be Clive Wood for me.

If you want to take a look through it before deciding whether or not to buy, I can bring it along next time.

Clive Wood as in the actor in The Bill?

I've ordered it: I really did need to order some stuff from Amazon.

And yes, that Clive Wood. His first time round at the RSC (he's been back since, I believe), he was a superb Edmund in the production of King LEar with Antony Sher as a glorious fool (same season Sher did his rather remarkable Richard III) and Michael Gambon as the King (ah, 1982, it was).

I rather liked Wood in The Bill. He seems to have made a career out of ambitious/morally ambiguous/outright villains. Must be the red hair.

Not on screen - I don't know if there's anything in any documentation, but a quick check in Liberation suggests not.

"Cral" came to mind, and googling "Cral" + "Travis" brought up Carol McCoy's Eclecticon '97 report (http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7/Convention/Reports/Eclec97.html); if you scroll down to the section headed "The Script" she reports reading an early draft of The Way Back, confusingly called Cygnus Alpha, in which there is a character called Cral Travis who fulfils most of the role of Dev Tarrant in the final version. So it's possible Travis's name was Cral, but not canonical.
