These things are fascinating, especially in the context of an online journal. Do our real selves come through in our writing, especially over time?
I've generally found that they do--I think that of all the online friends I've eventually met in person, only one has ever really surprised me by being very different from her written self-presentation.
Anyway, I chimed in. Hope it's educational. Am awaiting feedback on my own now, too.
I think I was fairly naive when I first came online and really put myself out there. I went through a more closed period after a couple of flame wars and nutjob experiences but these days... I think I'm largely WYSIWYG!
In the very early days (funny to think of the mid-90s as the very early days of enything), I found my way to common-interest bulletin boards, one of which was an astrology forum.
Innocently posting away about horoscopes, I was astonished one day to get an email from an apparently fundamentalist Christian lurker. YOU ARE A IDOT, the note read, and went on to tell me about how I was going to go to hell, etc., for my satanic beliefs, etc., all in similarly literary style, all in caps.
It didn't stop me posting about whatever I damn well pleased, but ever since then, if I'm particularly annoyed with myself, I mutter that I am a idot.
