Last year I posted about the Discovering Dickens project organized by Stanford Library. Participants received weekly facsimile instalments of Hard Times, either in the post or - for international readers - as PDF files.

Next year's project is Discovering Sherlock Holmes. From the website: In 2006, we will rerelease a collection of Arthur Conan Doyle's tales of Sherlock Holmes, just as they were originally printed and illustrated in The Strand Magazine... Over 12 weeks from January through April 2006, Stanford will be republishing, free of charge, two early Holmes stories, "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Speckled Band"; the nine-part novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles; and the famous "last" encounter between Holmes and Moriarty, "The Final Problem."

Oh, that's great! I haven't reread Sherlock Holmes stories for ages, and I love those illustrations from the Strand Magazine.

While I somehow failed to participate in the Dickens project, I think I will definitely sign up for this one.

It was a pleasure to get the Dickens every week, I really enjoyed myself. It's years since I've read The Hound of the Baskervilles, I'm looking forward to it. Enjoy!

PS. I haven't read any of the Sherlock Holmes stories in ages! This is such a great excuse to do so.

That's exactly what I thought. With Hard Times, because the instalments came at regular intervals, I made the effort (and had the time) to read them.

If I'm remembering right, there was some cheap edition of Holmes - it might have been one of the Wordsworth Classics - that was a facsimile of the Strand texts. Resized to book format it didn't look that good, of course. This sounds like a lovely project - I'm tempted, if only because my Collected Holmes is falling apart!

Yes, there were a couple of Wordsworth Classics, but the print was absolutely tiny, I couldn't read them all (and smudged on the cheap paper). Hard Times printed out really nicely, so hopefully these will too.
