Not the most accurate quiz I've ever taken (and one that made me choose between Journey of the Magi and A Christmas Carol, it hurtsss usss, yesss!). But I do love this time of year, and I do love this song.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
You are 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing'. You take
Christmas very seriously. For you, it is a
religious festival, celebrating the birth of
the Saviour, and its current secularisation
really irritates you. You enjoy the period of
Advent leading up to Christmas, and attend any
local carol services you can find, as well as
the more contemplative Advent church services
each Sunday. You may be involved in Christmas
food collections or similar charity work. The
midnight service at your church, with candles
and carols, is one you look forward to all
year, and you also look forward to the family
get together on Christmas Day.

What Christmas Carol are you?

I got that one too. Well, at least it isn't one of the Christmas hymns (I don't call them carols) that I absolutely detest - I've been known to arrive at carol services late to make sure I miss Once in Royal David's City. They didn't list anything I particularly like, and there are lots of those, like This Little Babe (Britten), Lullay My Liking, Turelurelu Patapatapan, just about anything on the soundtrack of The Mysteries, a whole lot of stuff in Latin...

And I got it, too! Quite how it came out with that result, given the answers that I'd entered, I really don't know.

There was a bit of a shortage of anything relating to what I actually do on Christmas Day, but then "a long country walk with one close relation" probably wouldn't get many takers.

I wouldn't want to bet; a long country walk used to be traditional in our family (who are not generally great walkers).

Yes, I found myself having to choose between a set of inappropriate answers in several cases. No wonder the results were off.

Cos I don't think they are, most of them are Christmas hymns from the great Victorian hymnwriters. Carols are more... spontaneous, vernacular, joyful (the modern ones I cite are generally settings of old texts). And they're not meant to be accompanied by an organ.

But it's all tied up with my dislike of any music I hear too often.

"You are 'Deck the Halls'! Let's be honest, it isn't Christmas you are celebrating, is it? In fact, you know full well that there were no shepherds in the fields in December, and that the date of Christmas was put at midwinter specifically to coincide with the older celebrations of Yule and the birth of Mithras. An unashamed Pagan, you take great glee in the number of carols referring to holly, evergreens and Winter's end, and will sing them with gusto. You know where they really came from. And you do enjoy the seasonal celebrations, regardless of their name... A merry Yule to you!"

I'm not really that pagan to be honest. But let's get back to the true meaning of Christmas - sacrificing the Winter King!

LOL! They should have saved Eccleston's regeneration till the Christmas episodes.

I love the music too. I don't go to a service any more, tho' I do try to listen to the carols from King's.

"You are 'The North Wind is Tossing the Leaves'! Aha! An antipodean!"

Well, if the quiz creator leaves room for us, yes...

I'm 'Adam Lay Y Bounden', which makes me a Christmas snob, apparently. It probably goes with being a fanfic snob too.

I was hoping for 'In the Bleak Midwinter'.

I dislike most of the major Christmas carols 'cos I had to sing them everywhere. And it always narked me at the Nine Lessons and Carols service that the choir got to sing the unusual ones, while the congregation always stuck with 'O Come All Ye Faithful', 'Once in Royal David's' (blech!), 'While Shepherds Watched', 'Hark the Herald' and so on. About the only one I did like was 'O Little Town'.

Adam Lay Y Bounden is a beautiful one. Yay for Christmas snobbery!

I seem to be in the minority in quite liking Once in Royal David's; I think the alto part must be interesting (not usual).

Hmm, I may have to put the Medieval Baebes CD on to listen to it again.

I like the description of how Nicola Marlow is supposed to sing her solo part in Once in Royal David's in End of Term, but I don't like the hymn itself. But given what you've told me about the usual lot of altos, I can see why it would appeal to you.

You definitely got one of the better carols!
