Last night [livejournal.com profile] edge_of_ruin and I took part in a loud and really quite lively performance of Mozart's Requiem. There had been a rehearsal on Wednesday night, and another on Thursday afternoon, and by last night I was pretty tired. So tired that partway through the Lux aeterna I realized my concentration had gone entirely and I was close to nodding off. Got to hope this doesn't in fact happen on Judgement Day.

In the library there are little cardboard signs that list all the different alarms you might hear, and what you should do if you hear one ("Continuous Bell: Leave Building By Nearest Exit"). On one of these cards someone had added: "Last Trump: Form Orderly Queue and Await Judgement". It was there for years, I wonder if it still is.

How lovely! His requiem is actually one of my favourite pieces of classical music, but I've hardly ever got the chance to listen to a live-performance. (Taking part isn't an option in my case.)

Only applies to Britain, I suppose...

*snort!*

And I did enjoy singing it - this is the second time now.

Sounds like fun.

I hope you are over your illness.

Lots of fun :-) And I seem to be a lot better now, thanks!

Ah, but the Lux aeterna is just Sussmayer's rehash of the opening, so I can see how you would have trouble concentrating. :-)

Just kidding. I love the Mozart Requiem, and it will always be special to me after I took part in the "Rolling Requiem" to commemorate the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

By the way, hi! I don't recall whether I ever introduced myself to you. I'm Bob, and I found your journal because you have Sylvia Engdahl listed as one of your interests. I'm a children's author myself, and I count her as one of my influences. I also like your K9 mood icon.

Hi! Welcome to my journal! :-) I think Sylvia Engdahl fans are a small bunch, but with good taste! Do you know her website? The last of her novels is coming back into print next year.

I took a peek at your site, and your own children's novel sounds lovely: has it been published in the UK?

Seem to be all fine at this end now. Just a little bit more teaching to do, and then term is over. It was hectic at the start of last week, tho'.

And the concert was great fun :-)

Glad it went well. Not surprised you were tired if you've been ill.

Thank you. My voice felt like it was all over the place, but I managed to hit the entrances and push out a bit of power on the loud bits - plus there were a lot of other altos, not like I was one of the soloists.

Hope you've not strained your voice.

I seem to have been crooning quite happily today; I think it was probably just post-flu etc.

A good deal safer place to nod off then behind the wheel of a car!

Got to hope this doesn't in fact happen on Judgement Day.

I'm glad you haven't yet had a chance to find out - no thanks to my lack of headlights - eternal or otherwise.

In the words of the immortal Morrissey:

"If a double-decker bus
Crashes into us -
To die by your side,
Well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine."

The fire doors at work carried signs reading: "This door is alarmed". To one of these signs, someone had added: "but stoical".

Glad it went well, nodding off nothwithstanding. And performances are draining, especially post-illness. *hugs*

Got to hope this doesn't in fact happen on Judgement Day.

I expect you'll be too busy sorting us into the appropriate categories from your obsidian throne to nod off on that day.

But with my feet up on my obsidian footstool, who knows what might happen?

And thank you for the hugs :-)

I'm glad it went well. I can imagine you were tired by that point - well done for keeping going.

If you do nod off on Judgement Day, we'll prop you up, so that it's less obvious. Just try not to snore.

Do you think the snoring would be heard over all the weeping and grinding of teeth?

You do that when you sleep, too? Crikey.

P.S. I'm glad you're feeling better, now. Does it mean you'll have a week's teaching to catch up on next term? :-(

Date: 2005-12-04 11:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
Thanks :-) Yes, I've got four or five hours worth at the start of next term, tho' I probably would have had to do it anyway - it's hard to fit all four supervisions in, and they tend to leave as soon as they can once term is over.

Glad you're feeling better (albeit tired)! The concert sounds great.

I think sleeping sounds like a good way to cope with the Last Judgement - avoid all the unpleasant wailing and screaming and wake up when it's all sorted.

If I can sleep through Pink Floyd concerts and Bond films, I'm sure I can manage Judgement Day.
