I'll try to type this up without exploding with excitement: the BBC have announced Torchwood, a 13-part Dr Who spin-off series starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack.

There's a link to an audio interview with RTD from that page; see also the BBC press release.

"Torchwood is a British sci-fi paranoid thriller, a cop show with a sense of humour," says Davies. "It's dark, wild and sexy, it's the X Files meets This Life. It's a stand-alone series for adult audiences which will have its own unique identity."

How cool is that? In my head it's playing like Ultraviolet, only with Captain Jack swanning around snogging everything that moves.

Article in the Independent here. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] msmanna and [livejournal.com profile] matildabj for posting about this!

I too am exploding with excitement. As far as I'm concerned, the BBC can put the licence fee up to whatever they like if it means they start churning out stuff like this!

I was thinking much the same thing about the licence fee!

I'm very excited. I hope Jack gets lots of snogging opportunities.

By coincidence, I read that Independent article just before I read your post! :) I think the anagram-title is very cool!

Is your icon shareable, aervir?

Well, I got from some icon community where it was up for grabs, so I suppose its creator wouldn't object.

Unfortunately, [livejournal.com profile] mylildementor, whom I have credited in my userpic info, seems to have deleted his/her journal recently, so it's no longer possible to contact him/her about any icons. But still, I'd say yes; otherwise, he/she wouldn't have put up any shareable icons at said community.

Which is all a really long-winded way of saying, "of course". :)

It looks like mylildementor has another LJ, [livejournal.com profile] omgwtf42; I know this because s/he is the organizer of the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_icons comm, and the most recent post was from that user, with a note saying "it's still me".

I agree, it's a fun icon.
I should make a general TV SF one, but I really really don't want to use the phrase "God I love Science Fiction" because of the G*d part. But "I love science fiction" sounds a bit lame. Hmmm.

Ah, thanks for the info! I hadn't known this. Maybe the icon was even posted on [livejournal.com profile] tardis_icons; I simply can't remember, not for the life of me.

The star, John Barrowman, almost stole the recent season of Doctor Who (which, if if turns up - watch, watch, watch!).

Interesting ... spin-offs aren't always that good, we'll have to wait and see.

On the plus side: More Captain Jack!
On the minus side: Presumably less (if any) Captain Jack in Doctor Who.

Particularly Dr Who spin-offs... (seen K9 and Company?).

Presumably less (if any) Captain Jack in Doctor Who.

He wasn't going to be in the next season, although there'd been promises he would appear in season 3. I don't know how this will affect that though.

Isn't it fantastic?

It does tell us what Jack's going to be doing next season, I suppose. Pity: he could have become the first person to snog *two* Doctors. :-)

I love the title, too, after all the wordgames in the last season of DW.

Ah, yes well that explains why RTD was saying "this season's 'word' is Torchwood" -- I was rather worried when I heard that, because I thought "oh no, they aren't going to try to reuse the same plot device, are they?" Some things are better left done only ONCE.

It also explains why they said that John Barrowman would be "too busy" to return as Captain Jack.

Torchwood really does sound very promising indeed. Much as I loved Captain Jack on DW, I think he'll make a better lead character than companion. He's too gung-ho action-adventure for a show where the violence option is never the right one.

In my head it's playing like Ultraviolet, only

...without the huge plot holes?

with Captain Jack swanning around snogging everything that moves.

Oh, yes! That too :-)

Y'know, the only thing which would make it better is casting Jack Davenport as well.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Happy place now.

I hope there are sexy doctors too.

With impeccable style of course.

And dare we hope for more anagrams?

And yes, I totally put off replying to this until I'd made this icon.
