With only 12 minutes to go, [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v informs me that today was National Poetry Day. So here is something in honour of the two furry creatures hopping around Clare College earlier, as well as the little fellow who eyed me askance from the fence just outside the kitchen window on Sunday morning. And also because [livejournal.com profile] communicator likes Yeats.

Come play with me;
Why should you run
Through the shaking tree
As though I'd a gun
To strike you dead?
When all I would do
Is to scratch your head
And let you go.

I missed national poetry day! Thanks for this, I have only just got round to reading my friends page on lj. Aww, squirrels. Doesn't UKLG write a poem about squirrels in Always Coming Home. I was thinking about it only this week 'In the Digger-Pine World' I don't know what a digger-pine is, but I like the idea.

I've still not read Always Coming Home. An excuse to dip into it now.

My mother learnt Lake Isle of Innisfree by heart at school and forty years later still knew it off by heart. After another twenty or thirty years, I don't know whether she could still do it, but I think it attests to the strong rhythms of Yeats' poetry.

My mother can still recite great chunks of Shakespeare which she was made to learn at school. She resented it at the time, and is grateful for it now that she's retired and does a lot of crosswords.
