Massive thanks to [livejournal.com profile] forodwaith for pointing me to an amazing Harry Potter version of The Waste Land: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Poet.
JUNE is the cruellest month, breeding
Voldemort out of the dead land, mixing
Crucio and Imperius, stirring
Harry to behave like a prat.
Mischief managed.

I haven't read much Harry Potter but - wow! - I'm gobsmacked!

Astonishing, isn't it? Works extremely well as HP-fic as well!

I haven't read any TS Eliot, but I'm gobsmacked too. :)

It is. I confess that, having now read Section I, I didn't find myself much the wiser about what Eliot was going on about, though there were some very arresting images. This bit would have been very apposite in 1989, 1993, 1997 or 2001, but not this year:

A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,

(Yes, I know that Eliot wasn't really talking about that sort of cricket.)

:-D

Wendy Cope's Waste Land limericks clear up much of what Eliot was going on about.

Thanks for the link!

Although I think it would be Remus who smoothes his fur with automatic hand and puts a record on the gramophone.

That's just absolutely astonishing. It almost makes mw want to go read the last two HP books, just to get the references.

We did 'The Wasteland' for A-level, and this is the first time ever that I've been glad about that.

But sometimes painful.

Quite magnificent, and I've never even read any Harry Potter.

One word: Brilliant!

I wonder whether one can do a master's thesis on that...
