A genre fan's instincts are the product of her viewing and fandom participation. On the matter of Travis, I reacted as fandom expected me to react. I was an instrument of the fandom. So if I'm guilty of mass murder preferring Croucher's Travis, then so are all of you.
Despite my Tarrant-love, I have to admit to a liking for Season 2. The Star One story arc, the increasing desperation of Blake and his ambiguous motives for acting the way he does, the oh-so-slashy Avon/Blakeness... I love season 2!
I got this rush of excitement when I realized it was the season 3 box set: OMG all the episodes that extra-tiny-eight-year-old-Altariel had her head fried by in 1980 - in DVD quality!!
I must admit to preferring S3 the first time through, but after that I found that Tarrant became increasingly more irritating and thus Blake became less so. So overall I prefer S2 now, though there are bits of S3 that I love. These are usually not the same bits of S3 that other people love, however. Volcano has probably my favorite A-V moments in the show. And Avon in the first half of Rumours may be his best bit, as well.
D'y'know, I really don't know what the answer to this question is. I could make a case for any of the series. There is good and bad in every one, as Paul McCartney reminds us. I'm going to go for S4 - it's got Headhunter, Orbit and Soolin.
Really it's hard to split S1 and S2 for me. I would hate to have never met Tarrant or Soolin - but I really missed Blake, Jenna and Liberator. All seasons have individual eps I love, but I have to admit that virtually all my B7 fic was set when Blake was there... except the GP stuff and, of course, Blake was there too. I guess while I wasn't superfond of Blake I loved the Blake-Avon friendship.
