My friend Tavia is carrying out a survey as part of her M.Phil. degree, to find out what people consider to be the classics of literature. Please go and fill in the survey - it will take you a couple of minutes (unless you spend ages working out your list of classics).

You can do the survey here on the web: http://www.viragene.com/survey1.htm

So what were your choices, altariel? (see mine on my journal)

I answered it very quickly, because I knew that if I started to think about it, I would spend a day working out a top ten. So I'm not entirely satisfied with the (short) list I came up with, but they were the ones that came to mind first.

1. 'Persuasion' by Jane Austen
2. 'Daniel Deronda' by George Eliot
3. 'Four Quartets' by TS Eliot
4. 'The Lord of the Rings' by JRR Tolkien
5. 'Utopia' by Sir Thomas More

That was just what I did - I knew that if I sat and thought about a list of classics, I could easily spend a day on it. I ended up with a quick list of five books (listed up thread, I think).

Awww, I love George Eliot too, but...DANIEL DERONDA? Mira, bleeah! Klesmer, bleeah! Mordecai, extra-bleeah!

Quite fond of Klesmer, myself. And it's nice to have a heroine who's quite so opposed to trad family values.

Public television will be broadcasting the recent teleplay tomorrow and Monday, so maybe I'll feel better about them seeing them embodied. (Or, then again, maybe I'll throw things at the TV set.)

It's a bit of an 'edited highlights' version of the book. I think it's well-shot, it just needed another episode or four.
