Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] communicator

In Farenheit 451, volunteers memorise entire books, to preserve the text from burning: what text would you learn and save?

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban

Have you ever had a crush on a character in a book?

Mm, all the time. Make mine angsty, dark-haired, and cerebral.

The last book you bought is:

I am of course not buying books at the moment; so the last three books I bought were from Persephone: The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher (brilliant); The Village by Marghanita Laski (not the best book about the immediate post-war period that I've read recently and I've been reading a few); and They Can't Ration These by Vicomte de Mauduit ("ROAST STARLINGS: After skinning the birds, clean them and roast them as you would sparrows.").

The last book you finished is:

The.Powerbook by Jeanette Winterson (thank you,[livejournal.com profile] applegnat)

What are you currently reading:

Depending which room I'm in:

Selected Poems by Christopher Logue
The Orwell Mystique by Daphne Patai
Three Guineas by Virginia Woolf
They Can't Ration These by Vicomte de Mauduit
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein

Five desert island books:

Like [livejournal.com profile] communicator, I'll skip the book I've memorized and pick:

Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold
Miss Ranskill Comes Home by Barbara Euphan Todd
Four Quartets
They Can't Ration These by Vicomte de Mauduit
Persuasion by Jane Austen

I barely read any non-fiction these days. Not sure why - perhaps I've had to read too much? I didn't read much fiction for years and years, but seem to have become voracious in the past five years or so. I do skim-read a great deal; there are not many books that I read 'properly'. I've been reading 'Bleak House' since the start of the year - I'm reading that one properly.

I skim-read fiction when it's a skim-reader, if you see what I mean. I can spend a long time over something if the language really grabs me. Just as you say - I like being in fiction, but sometimes I don't want a total immersion experience.

I'm really getting into it. I'll have to find some his versions of the Iliad.

I was thinking in bed last night it might be quite a hard book to memorize - want to do half?

The spelling alone would pose serious challenges. Sure, I'll split it with you. As long as I get at least a couple of Arga Wargas and maybe a "many cools and party cools of the addom," I'll be happy.

I want lots of time back way way backs, and definitely a "putcha putcha putcha".

(Somehow it seems in the spirit of the book that a misspelt and slightly misremembered version would be handed down.)
