[livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 has a brilliant icon with "God I love science fiction" on it, so I nicked the words and stuck them on pictures. I did some from 'The Happiness Patrol' with the Kandyman and the pink TARDIS, but they look rubbish, unfortunately. Feel free to pinch if you like any of them, although I know I'm not the most accomplished iconist in town.

I would pinch all of them if it didn't mean scrapping six of my current allowance... well, seven, given that I've another one I'm planning to add when I get round to finding the right text.

Help yourself and swap 'em in and out. I have got to get the Scary Hair onto my regular rotation.

The other snag is that it's not true. I don't love science fiction.

A mere technicality, surely?

I know I'm not the most accomplished iconist in town.

You make the writing big enough and legible enough to read, and that scores pretty highly in my book. Oh yes, and they're well-chosen pics and words and brilliantly witty concepts, too.

Thank you. I would love to be able to do snazzy things with text and images, but I think the learning curve may be too great, and I don't have enough patience.

It's not that difficult. I noticed you had saved all of your pics as jpegs, which really blurs the pic when it needs to be compressed into the 40k limit size. Saving them as .gifs gives much better results and less blur, and also more clarity for the text (and clear text on icons is a particular pet peeve of mine, hate the ones where one can't see what the words are!). What software are you using?

Aaah! Yes, the blurry text thing has been driving me potty. Thank you!

What software are you using?

Very, very basic - cropping images/fiddling with brightness, contrast, etc. in MS Picture Manager, and then doing the text in Paint.

*shudder at Paint* I heartily recommend Paint Shop Pro for good, basic image editing. There's a shareware edition out there that's fab, and I hear the price isn't too either. PSP is fairly good with text. Unfortunately, so far only Photoshop and Photoshop elements have *really* good text functions, like proper antialiases. Antialias smoothes the edges of the text so it won't look craggy (as the word "Doctor" in your default icon). And you can also put a border around the text--the icon I'm using now uses all those things in its text.

Paint Shop Pro has antialiasing too, but I think it's pretty crap...

And hey, if you want me to help, I'm game! I love fiddling with icons!:D You just give me a pic or to and the text, etc... and I'll make anything you want:).

Lines around text! That's exactly what I need! I had a devil of a job getting the "Doctor" on the icon to look even remotely readable.

Yeah, Paint is fairly crappy and fiddly. I also seem to have a piece of software called PhotoStudio: I have no idea what it can do or whether it will be any good.

I may just take you up on your icon-fiddling offer... Thanks! :-D

Sure, no prob!:)send the pics/icons my way. Hm, probably best with the original source photo, as I can tweak things in Photoshop so the images aren't too blurry and stuff.

*bounces, then returns to her massive B7 pimping session*

I was trying to do a "God I love science fiction" one for [livejournal.com profile] communicator using this picture of Ripley (you can see my effort at the bottom of the page). Reckon it's doable with that picture?

Not necessarily with *that* Ripley pic, as the contrasts and the lighting and the compression make the pic NOT good source material.
And I'm itching to fix the blur on my beloved Klute as well... and damn, why aren't people using commas after "God" in this thing?!? Drives me up the wall, it does.

I know it's a phrase from Farscape parodying itself, so the "God" fits in there, but... wonder what I should substitute it for? Goddess is too long, God is too masculine, The Forces of the Universe way too long... *stops rambling now*

Hey, you interested in a "respect for the B7 redheads!" icon? Granted, most of them are villains, but... there's Meegat! Chenie! Deva!

From: [identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com
I put the comma in some for punctuation's sake, and missed it in others for a breathiness feel: "godilovesciencefiction".

How about "Damn, I love science fiction".

Love the idea of a redheads icon!

So, ranting aside, um... wanna send me the original pic you used for the Klute? I can fix the blur and the text:). Do you want to outline the text with something darker?:)

Email, as usual, is snowgrouse at phnet dot fi.
